She stood near the clearing, a slender hand resting on the ancient tree overshadowing a brook that burbled gently in the evening air. Sunlight still licked the water as it swirled in gentle confusion. She watched as one person after the other stepped into the light and disappeared into a portal of brilliant colors. Each time one person stepped into the portal she held her breath waiting for them to come back but it didn't happen.

The hour was growing late. It was her job to report back to her village of this strange disappearance of the adjoining villages.

What could she report if no one came back? Why were they all willingly stepping into nowhere? The people lined up were talking in subdued tones to each other. She couldn't make out their words and their dialects were strange to her.

Suddenly, only one villager remained. He was tall, taller than anyone she'd ever seen and he waited patiently as light erupted from the portal and colors sparked upward from that strange orifice. Would he go, too? He slowly moved toward the portal as the last light flickered. She leaned in, she could hardly contain her fear and excitement.

He stopped and looked over toward the tree where she thought she was safely hidden. He reached a hand toward her, beckoning her in the shadows. As she did, he moved closer and closer to the opening. His hand disappeared into the portal amidst flashes of color too bright for her eyes which gleamed in anticipation and wonder.

He stepped in to the portal with one last wave and his frame was disappearing. She left her hiding spot and ran as fast as she could to the portal. Arriving she ducked close and looked where he had last been seen. There was no portal and even the grass around it appeared untouched. She landed on the untouched grass and pounded its surface, her tears poured out watering the grass.

How would she return now with nothing to share but the fact that the village people had left into a portal that no longer exists. Why didn't she go when she was called?

What I usually miss most athis community is reading people like you. You took me with you the entire story! Sequence? What happened when she went back to the village? :D

How have you been my friend from faraway lands? :)

Thank you so much for the compliment! I always appreciate your feedback. I don't know what happened when she went back to the Village... I was struck I her regret at not taking the opportunity while she could.

You are most welcome:)

Some writes are without closure... we can say this is one.

Oh no! I can only imagine how that would haunt her forevermore... she returns to the village, no-one believes her, and then she spends the rest of her days wishing that she too had stepped into the portal. (I'm a tragic. Shhh.)

Come write with us for Day 536: Resurrect

Lol @kaelci - that occured to me, too!
