The New Guy
Gertie elbowed Martha and hissed in her ear, "Martha, did you see that new gentleman?
"Well yes, Gertie, I'm not blind yet."
"He sure cuts a fine figure of a man, Martha!"
Gertie coughed into her cloth napkin and reached knarled fingers out to touch her carefully set white hair.
"Look at you, primping like a high-school girl, Gertie. He can't be over 72!"
"I don't know why you're saying that. After they turn 30, they're all fair game," she replied.
Martha let out a loud guffaw and the aforementioned gentleman turned a startled face towards the two old women. His bald head gleamed under the bright lunch room lights and his white teeth flashed a big smile.
"Martha, did you see? He smiled at me!"
Martha patted Gertie's arm, her eyes twinkling with laughter.
"Pull in your cougar claws, Gertie. Did you forget we just celebrated your 89th birthday?"
Gertie scowled at her friend and look down at her short fingernails. The bald gentleman began walking towards their table. The lunchroom nurse attendant cut in front of him bringimg Martha and Gerdie's pills to the table. "Here's your laxatives Gertie," the nurse said with a wink.
Gertie put her hand up to cover the side of her blushng cheek and shot an angry knife glare at the nurse's retreating back noticing the bald man stifling a chuckle.
