There was no dew on the morning grass she noticed, which meant it would rain today. She had been living on the Hanley Farm for more than four years and could predict the weather like no other chicken. Ginger was her name. Named for the bright orange feathers that surrounded her plump chicken body.

What she didn’t expect was that the clouds would move in so quickly. She had barely heard the rooster announcing the sun had arrived before she heard the first rumble of thunder in the distance. She would have to lay her eggs in the moisture rich air of the new day. There would be no sun for Ginger.

After she left her nest she tried her best to get something to eat. The farmer was plowing the fields but made sure the chicken feed was laid out on the ground before he started his chores. She loved living here. She loved the predictability of it all. Even the rain seemed to give her time to prepare.

She found a nice spot next to the fence and let the slow rain fall over her feathers. Although she would have preferred a sunny day, she did appreciate the cool of the rain.
