Friday Rock | #4

When I joined the #fridaysrock I became more curious about the pieces of rocks and minerals I have at home. It is interesting to learn something about them and to search for information. Thank you @nat-expressions for creating the tag #fridaysrock. It is not just knowing what I have but also reviewing the posts of the others that hooked me into this new world of rocks and minerals.

PYRITE

Today I would like to show you this beautiful piece of pyrite.

image

The piece is black and heavy and it has significant structure. The nickname "Fool's Gold" hardly can be used for this sample. However it was intetesting to learn that there are specimens of pyrite found with small content of gold.

I personally like that black colour and how it reflects the light like mirror, the polished edges and the rough base.

Let's have closer look.

The parallel lines are so symmetric.

If I am not mistaken, this piece my son brought from Sofia, after visiting the so caled Earth and Man National Museum. That museum houses few permanent exhibitions of which "Giant Crystals" is perhaps the most famous and the reason the museum to be opened.

That photo shows some of the giant crystals in the main hall of the museum.

Source

The story indeed is interesting and you can find it in the official site of the museum here.
But I would like to give you a short preview.

The collection of the 53 giant crystals was donated by the Bulgarian mineralogist Ilia Deleff. He immigrated in South America and spent his life in search and preservation of the giant crystals and other minerals. He lived in Brasil where he has explored one of the richest in minerals regions Minas Gerais.

Thanks to this remarkable Bulgarian the museum has not only the giant crystals collection, but also some other of his minerals gathered for many years and again thanks to him the museum was opened as he requested his collections to be placed in suitable building.

The shop in the museum offers different stones and minerals and my son has bought some more from there. They will be seen in my next #Fridaysrock posts.

Thank you for viewing and reading.

That is beautiful and great photos!

Thank you so much!

Wow thats a big ol chunk of it, i usually find it sprinkled on rocks or little balls of it. Nice find....

Thank you. 😀
It is impressive in size and I am happy to have it.

Thank you very much for sharing this! And thank you for joining in on the #fridaysrock tag. Your piece of pyrite is very interesting. It looks like little chunks all mixed together. I wonder what caused the little pieces to seem like they are going every which way...when the lines within each small piece seem so perfectly parallel.

Thank you very much! Glad you like it.
It is like some abstract work of the nature.

What a beautiful piece. I love the triangular faces at the top of the specimen. Always cool to see something different than the usual cube-shapes.

Thank you very much!
I am glad you like it as this is one of my favourite pieces.
