Buah Timun Suri "boh timon wah" (bilingual)

This one fruit is never absent every month of Ramadan arrives. For a whole month, this fruit is always present to accompany Muslims breaking. At first glance the fruit looks like a pumpkin, but because it has a lot of water content, this fruit is called as a cucumber.

Yes, Timun SURI. For the people of Aceh, this fruit is called 'TIMON WAH'. 'WAH' means broken or split. In addition to the color that began yellowing, the sign when the fruit is ripe fruit is broken in some parts.

Different elsewhere, once picked, Aceh residents then wrap the cucumber fruit SURI with banana tree bark. Once wrapped neatly, then the cucumbers are brought to the market for sale.

Because it has a lot of water content, serving this fruit for breaking menu is very easy. Just peel the skin and then the fruit flesh is put in a glass. Plus a little sugar or syrup and ice cubes, cucumber SURI is ready to eat when breaking.

Buah yang satu ini tidak pernah absen setiap bulan Ramadan tiba. Selama satu bulan penuh, buah ini selalu hadir menemani umat muslim berbuka. Sepintas buahnya mirip labu, tapi karena memiliki kandungan air yang banyak, buah ini disebut sebagai mentimun.

Ya, Timun SURI. Bagi warga Aceh, buah ini disebut ‘TIMON WAH’. ‘WAH’ artinya pecah atau terbelah. Selain warna yang mulai menguning, tanda ketika buah ini sudah matang adalah buah mengalami pecah pada beberapa bagian.

Berbeda di tempat lain, setelah dipetik, warga Aceh kemudian membungkus buah timun SURI dengan pelepah pohon pisang. Setelah dibungkus dengan rapi, kemudian timun-timun tersebut dibawa ke pasar untuk dijual.

Karena memiliki kandungan air yang banyak, menghidangkan buah ini untuk menu berbuka sangatlah mudah. Cukup dengan dikupas kulitnya lalu daging buahnya dimasukkan dalam gelas. Ditambah sedikit gula ataupun sirup serta es batu, timun SURI ini siap disantap saat berbuka.
