This is part 2 on food that can get extreme reaction from people. Durian is a fruit that you either love it or you hate it. Why is that so you may ask. The reason is because of the strong pungent smell that expelled from the fruit.

This is how a durian tree looks like. Nothing spectacular but the fruits will only fall from the tree at night. Some myths is that durian trees have eyes as there was never any report of durians dropping on top of anyone head. As you can see their spiky shells will do a lot of harm if they fall on the pickers head.

Before reading anything about durian, i have the misconception that eating durian will increase my cholesterol. But i was wrong. Apparently durian has good mono unsaturated fats that can lower harmful cholesterol levels.
Beware as eating durian will make you put on weight. Those that love this fruit tend to be addicted and will consume more than they should, so their weight will increase.
But in terms of nutrients, they are rich in potassium, iron, vitamin C and B complex. I read that eating durian will improve muscle strength and blood pressure, and will enhance ree blood cell formation.

Because durian contain simple sugars like sucrose, fructose and glucose, people with diabetes must limit their durian intake.

As mentioned durian contain high potassium which can reduce fatigue and relieve mental stress and anxiety.

Some myths that you cannot drink liquor or beer after you eat durian have been told by my grandmother. There are no scientific findings to support this myth. Things like you have to eat mangosteen when you eat durian, is also not proven. I think maybe the fruit seller wanted more sales, so the seller spread this myth about durian must be eaten with mangosteen. Well he is smart as he now sells 2 kinds of fruits to each customer who buys durian.

This is how a road side durian stall look like, as durian has this pungent smell, they are not allowed to sell in a constraint space or room. Those that are sold in the supermarket have already been sealed and wrapped so that the smell will not be spread inside as there are many people who cannot take the smell. Some get so badly affected that they can feel faint or nauseous when they smell durian. Durians are banned in public places like trains, buses, airport, hotel and offices.

I hope the people that have not tasted durian will have the opportunity to do so in the future. For people who love durian, continue to enjoy but need to restrict the intake amount as they are addictive and we tend to lose control in our i take once we started to eat.
