Glaucoma Awareness Week Celebration #Glaucoma Education

This week is glaucoma awareness week, glaucoma awareness is celebrated every year from the 10th to the 16th of March Every year, and this year was no exception. In honor the celebration lots of outreaches were held from the 10th to the 16th and the screening exercise were geared more towards glaucoma diagnosis and its education. The video is a recording of our recent educational activity at Foase Township a small rural area within the Kumasi Metropolis, the purpose of the session was to enlighten the town folks on what glaucoma is, the dangers it poses to our visual health and the best way to deal with it, which is early diagnosis and management. As such they were thus entreated to participate in the free outreach program been organized for them that those who may have the condition may be diagnosed early and treated.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in among Africans and African Americans and it is quite unfortunate that statistics show that about 10% of individuals who receive proper treatment still end up blind hence the importance of early detection. Currently glaucoma has no cure and can only be managed, visual fields lots cannot be regain only what is left can be maintained. Open angle glaucoma which is more predominant in Africa doesn’t give any symptoms until is too late. Glaucoma is no respecter of person, irrespective of your age, tribe, gender or geographical location you are at risk. Early diagnosis is key to preservation of vision.
