The forearm

A forearm fracture is a break in one or both of the bones that make up this limb. The forearm consists of two bones: the radius and the ulna. The radius is the smaller of the two bones and is on the side of the thumb, while the ulna is longer than the two bones and is located on the side of the little finger.

Forty-two per cent of boys and 27 per cent of girls suffer one or more fractures before the age of 16. Bone fractures are more common in summer, in the left upper extremity and as the age of the child increases. Most occur at home, and as a result of falls. The most frequent is the forearm, followed by the hand and elbow, which can leave serious sequelae, neurological, vascular or angular.

Fractures

A forearm fracture is a break in one or both of the bones that make up this limb, which causes a lot of pain and requires immediate treatment.

The treatment of fractures in pediatric orthopedics is always oriented towards the least possible aggressiveness for the child and depends on the age of the child, the displacement of the bone and whether or not there are adjacent structures affected.

An undisplaced or minimally displaced fracture in which there is no vascular or nerve lesion requires immobilization with plaster cast and monitoring. A displaced fracture requires reduction, placement of the bone in place and immobilization, or reduction and fixation.

Surgery?

In children's long bones there are two growth zones, one at each end. "When the lesion affects a growth cartilage in wrist fractures and, above all, in elbow fractures it can produce sequels of limitation to mobility, angular deformities, elbow in varus, when the elbow deviates inwards, or in valgus, when it deviates outwards. These angulations, in turn, can produce neurological lesions of the ulnar nerve elongations and, sometimes, generate partial paralysis with sensitivity disorders and even with retraction in the fingers".

Treatment depends on the severity of the injury and may include:

  • Put the pieces of bone back in place, requiring anesthesia or surgery.
  • Keep the parts together while the bone recovers.
  • Using a cast or splint to support the bone.
  • Surgeries where metal plates can be inserted with screws or screws only.
  • Pain medications depending on your level.
