Hip Dysplasia

Developmental dysplasia is a congenital (present at birth) disorder of the hip joint. It occurs in one in 1,000 live births. The hip joint is formed as a ball and socket joint. In hip developmental dysplasia, the hip joint may be shallow, allowing the ball of the femoral bone, also known as the femoral head, to slide in and out of the hip joint. The head of the femur can be partially or completely removed from the acetabulum.

The highest incidence of developmental hip dysplasia occurs in firstborn female infants with a history of a close relative with this disorder.

Ethiology

Hip dysplasia is considered "multifactorial inheritance. Multifactorial means that the birth defect can be caused by many factors. These factors are usually genetic and environmental.

Often, one sex (male or female) is affected more often than the other when it comes to multifactorial traits. There appears to be a different "threshold of manifestation," meaning that one sex is more likely than the other to manifest the problem. For example, hip dysplasia is more common in women than men.

One of the environmental influences believed to contribute to hip dysplasia is the baby's response to the mother's hormones during pregnancy. A narrow uterus that does not allow fetal movement or a breech delivery can also cause hip dysplasia. The left hip is usually more affected than the right hip by the position of the fetus inside the uterus.

Symptoms

The following are the most common symptoms of hip dysplasia. However, each baby may experience symptoms differently. Some of the symptoms may include the following:

The leg may appear shorter on the dislocated hip side.

The leg on the side of the dislocated hip may turn outward.

The folds in the skin of the thigh or buttocks may appear uneven.

The space between the legs may appear wider than normal.

An infant with developmental hip dysplasia may have a partial or total hip dislocation. This means that the head of the femur slides partially or completely out of the socket. The symptoms of hip dysplasia may resemble other medical disorders of the hip. Always consult your baby's physician for a diagnosis.
