Shoulder Injuries and Shoulder Pain
Pain Shoulder
What most people call 'pain shoulder' is actually a set of several joints that combine with tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of movement in the arm, from scratching the back to making the perfect ball throw.
But mobility comes at a price. It can lead to increased problems with instability or compression of the soft tissue or bone structures in your shoulder, resulting in pain. You may feel pain only when you move your shoulder, or all the time. The pain may be temporary or ongoing, requiring medical diagnosis and treatment.
This article explains some of the most common causes of shoulder pain, as well as some general treatment options. Your doctor can give you more detailed information about your shoulder pain.
Tendinitis
A tendon is a cord that connects muscle to bone. Most tendonitis is the result of wear on the tendon that occurs slowly over time, as in the process of wearing off the sole of a shoe that eventually splits in two overuse.
Generally, tendinitis is one of two types:
Acute. Doing many ball throws or other overhead activities, at work or sports, can lead to acute tendinitis.
Chronic. Degenerative diseases, such as osteoarthritis or repeated wear and tear due to age, can lead to chronic tendinitis.
The most commonly affected tendons in men are the four rotator cuff tendons and one of the bicep tendons. The rotator cuff is made up of four small muscles and their tendons that cover the head of your arm bone and hold it in the shoulder socket. Its rotator cuff helps provide movement and stability of the shoulder.
Osteoarthritis
Shoulder pain can also be the result of osteoarthritis. There are many types of osteoarthritis. The most common type of osteoarthritis in the shoulder is also called "wear and tear" osteoarthritis. Symptoms such as inflammation, pain, and stiffness typically begin in middle age. Osteoarthritis develops slowly and the pain it causes gets worse over time.
Osteoarthritis may be related to sports injuries, work injuries, and chronic wear and tear. Other types of osteoarthritis may be related to rotator cuff tears, infection, or inflammation of the joint lining.
People will often avoid shoulder movements in an attempt to reduce the pain of osteoarthritis. This sometimes leads to tension or stiffness of the soft parts of the joint, resulting in painful restriction of movement.
