Borrowed Notions Are a Double-Edged Sword

in #gallerani6 years ago

Change is such an easy thing to be afraid of... It's so easy to think that change is bad and to come up with random reasons why you shouldn't change and why you should just stick to the status quo.

I've found myself afraid of change in many different capacities. I've found myself making excuses for why I shouldn't change and why I should just keep things exactly how they are.

One of the greatest luxuries in life, in my opinion, is the ability to change your mind. To have the ability to strip away borrowed notions from those around you and think for yourself.

What are borrowed notions?

They are ideas that have been instilled in you from your parents, your siblings, your friends, your teachers, your environment...

Borrowed notions are ideas that aren't truly yours. They're simply ideas that someone else propounded onto you.

They may have not even been aware of what they were doing to you. That they were changing the very fundamental way that you thought and acted.

Borrowed notions can be a dangerous thing. Especially in a society of intense interconnectedness as we live in today.

It's so easy to just pick up twitter or Instagram or even Steemit and read something that someone else wrote and take it as gospel.

It's so easy to just take their idea and allow it to morph the very way that you think.

This is a double-edged sword -- some ideas are worth changing for, but many ideas aren't

Learn to discern which ideas are worth changing for and you will find that you wield a great power. A power that 99% of the world will never wield and will never even comprehend.
