Game of FOMOs and lessons from Thrones

in #gameofthrones5 years ago (edited)

Those of you who read my posts often have probably recognized that I am not into a huge amount of entertainment activities - unless one considers Steem entertaining - which I do. However, there is one TV series that I am keen on and it starts again after a long hiatus tonight. You know what I am talking about I am sure.

Game of Thrones

The problem is that I it is unavailable on Netflix (which has crap on it anyway and I should ditch) and it doesn't come to Finnish free-to-air programming so despite my best efforts, I FOMO'd out and got a subscription to HBO Nordic so that I can watch the series.

There is another reason for this too as while my wife has no time for anything due to her studies, I may be able to convince her to sit down with me once a week to watch. She is not a fan of Lord of the Rings like I am and has never seen Star Wars because, she is the kind of person that doesn't like awesomeness. But, obviously since she married me, she decided to give awesome a go.

When we sat down to watch GoT for the first time together she wasn't really into it, but by the third episode or so she was warming up to it and is now able to suspend her disbelief in dragons for long enough to enjoy the story line itself. She us a convert. She has about two weeks left in her studies though so I am unsure if she can spare the time - if not - we can rewatch later (I don't mind).

There are a couple of Game of Thrones competitions being run out there with the two I know of by @newaginv and @themarkymark so if interested, check their blogs for details. but, I have always wanted to write a little based on the episodes so what I am likely going to do is a series of blogs while the final season runs. I don't care much for the reviews and things of episodes and for me to be entertained, there has to be something useful, insightful, learnable contained in what I watch. That is why I don't watch much popular stuff as for the most part, it is generic.

So, the series I am going to write is:

Lessons from GoT

The goal is to watch and episode and take a scene or two from it where I think there is something that relates to our world and present it in some kind of post. This might go badly but my hope is that others who also watch GoT will take their own scenes and lessons and add them in the comments section as well so each episode will have a pool of things that people think are worthy to learn from.

Sounds like a plan?

A lot of people in this world spend a lot of time consuming without checking if what they eat is beneficial for their life as a whole. Sure, it is meant to all be entertainment but when the average American is spending a full-time job watching TV a week plus social media on top, we should probably think if what we spend our time has nutritional value - at least sometimes.

Let's see how this goes and whether there is anything to learn at all from GoT. What I learned today is that I got a month of HBO free to trial, and I will likely kill the account at the earliest possible opportunity after the Game of Thrones season ends.

hahahahah :D

Love it!!! Although, one of these things should state: "Hold the Door"!

I started the books of the series - A Song of Ice and Fire - during my first year at the university. Which was about 15 years ago. I had no personal computer back then so I read more. Funny thing is I had also no problem reading them in the order I found them on the market - vol. 2, vol. 3, then vol.1

They were good stories in general although I began noticing repetition. When an author says the same phrases over and over I get a bit disappointed.

On the other hand, it's curious how sequel writers manage to tell what has already happened in some retrospection thoughts spread around. Subtly. But still I knew all of vol. 1 before I got my hands onto it.

High budget sure payed off for this TV series. Funny thing is the name of the first book seems to have been the best one of them all and it stuck for all the saga on TV. The others being A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, Feast for Crows, Dances with Smurfs and so on...

Because I started with the shows, I chose not to read the books but I might give them a go later (when time permits) as I generally prefer the books over the movies. Repetitive phrases are likely hard to avoid because when a writer is writing so much but over such a long period of time, it is probably hard to keep track. I know for me, I don't remember half the stuff I write and it might only be a day or two ago :D

Of course. Still, I am not impressed by G. R. R. Martin's writing in general. The storytelling, yes. So, if one would like details...

Details are good enough in the TV series, though, really. I have no complaints on them missing any...anything.

His writing doesn't get a lot of brownie points from me either but he gets an A for imagination

The devil is in the details..and this man knows how to write every excruciating detail in excruciating detail!! But I gotta say, he's freaking brilliant... Just look at how successful his series is on HBO... He's a major reason for that success (he's a big part of the show!).

Obviously game of thrones to me is strictly to entertainment, just like I found Spartacus to be entertaing too and nothing more really, sometimes these things are just used to thrill

Two totally different yet totally similar series (at least first two seasons of Spartacus).

Spartacus did borrow the shock effect of getting rid of main characters like there’s no tomorrow from GRRM though. But it being written for TV there was not much character depth to fallback on, unlike in GoT which had vastly developed characters already. It’s rather easy to make Spartacus “entertainment” because the shock effect is the storyline, the intrigue itself was all rather predictable. With the exception of Ashur maybe.

One wonders if the series would have had more character dev if not for the passing away of Andy Whitfield.

We'll see what I can pull from it then. Inspiration for life lessons can be found from many sources - applying them is the harder part.

Yeah that application for utilisation seems the problems Lol I hope you have fun watching.

First 2 seasons of Spartacus were gold!! I stopped watching after the main character was replaced (due to real life health issues). The utter mayhem in that show was brilliant!

Game of thrones, game of thrones everywhere. I aint mad at it tho its one of the few series i still get hyped for. Im down for the challenge too, if I can find where to download it from before im spoiled that is.

I think there is a lot to be learned from GoT that can be useful in Steemit :0D

I once wrote a post called Game of Steems about the different Steem clans... I don't think it did well. :D

Thanks for the mention! I think you will do great by sharing your thoughts and lessons; I will look forward to them. In reality, I think there are some as working in a Corporate world you see plenty Game of Thrones and Art of War type references!

Generally when I watch things my brain looks for some kind of relationship to my real life. Unfortunately I normally watch porn and there is very little similarity ;D

You are right though, there is a great deal of references that are getting used in business - not sure if it is a great way though.

I had hoped the writer would have finished the books before the series concludes..
Unfortunately that's not happening and we get a rushed ending.

In any case though, it is hands down the most entertaining thing I've watched on television in a decade or more.

Plenty of lessons to pick out for those who really observe...i just might follow you with that challenge

In any case though, it is hands down the most entertaining thing I've watched on television in a decade or more.

THe last show I liked as much was probably The Wire which is fantastic.

Big George R.R. Martin has other priorities.. like this video series.. to worry about before finishing the long-awaited, and desperately delayed, book 6 ...

I have never watched one episode lol. There is a lot that seems to pass me by and maybe one day I will get to it. I may start watching and play catch up. How many seasons do I need to catch up to be part of this or can any episode count?

Well, this will be the 8th season but to be a part of this you could watch from now but, it'll suck for you :D

Read the books, you'll be 80% there. Which means you'll be 90% more aware than the casual viewer! 👍
