Such an obvious and much-needed feature that Nintendo Switch owners have been begging for since its release is cloud saves. One of the problems with the Switch is if you lose your console or it gets damaged you would lose your save games.

As someone who has put countless hours into perfecting Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and still not quite finished just yet, it would be devastating if anything were to ever happen to my console and I lost my Zelda BOTW save, as well as saves for other games.

Nintendo promised an update on its online service to come in May 2018 a few months ago and they've delivered with an update posted on the Nintendo website today.

An online subscription will set you back $19.99 USD ($29.95 AUD) per year for an individual membership, but what you get is worth so much more.

  • Cloud saves
  • Access to 20 NES games; Soccer, Tennis, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros, Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, Dr Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros, 3 and more to be announced.
  • Online competitive/cooperative multiplayer, including support for sharing gameplay, allowing a friend to take over and attempt to defeat a boss or complete a level for example. Or your friends can just watch you play as well.

Understandably, if you hate paying for things like online services, you might be annoyed that Nintendo is offering a paid option to backup your save games, but nothing for those who cannot afford to pay (or don't want to). If you want to backup precious game saves, you've got to pay up.

The online service will be released in September 2018, so we are still a few months away from release. In the meantime, keep your consoles safe so you don't lose the 200 hours you've invested in Zelda BOTW.
