Video game review: InFamous First Light (2014)

in #gaming6 years ago

Well, hello again, Steemians. I'm back yet again with another video game review to toss at you guys, this time I'm going over a shorter title that comes from the InFamous series, it's called InFamous First Light. InFamous First Light is a game where you take on the role of an intergalatic space pirate who is after booty and rum, and won't let any god damn galactic psychic vampires stand in his god damn way. standalone DLC entry into the InFamous series, and serves as somewhat of a prequel for InFamous Second Son. It was developed by Sucker Punch Productions as you probably guessed, and published by Sony in August of 2014. If you don't know, the InFamous series is a Playstation exclusive, meaning the PC master race and Xbox One owners can suck it, suck it dry. will find themselves unable to play this.

Now, I've been pretty mixed on this franchise over the years. I personally thought the first game was pretty good, with the second game being a dull, lifeless experience. InFamous Second Son really brought it back from the brink for me, and was a very enjoyable game, in my opinion. I didn't know what to expect with this DLC exactly, since typically a lot of DLC in these recent years have been quite lackluster. However, much like the Festival of Blood DLC for InFamous 2, this DLC holds down the fort quite well on its own and proves to be worth your time easily.

One of the good things about First Light is that this DLC stands on its own two feet, and doesn't require you to have previous knowledge of either Second Son or any of the other entries in the series. It fills you in entirely on the situation of Conduits and gives you a decent chunk of backstory, just in case you've never played any of the other InFamous games. As a matter of fact, you don't even need to own Second Son to have access to this DLC and be able to play it. It's literally a stand alone DLC, kinda like how Blood Dragon was its own thing even though it was made with Far Cry 3. Anyways, First Light is based around Fetch, a character you come across who helps you in Second Son. She's a pretty decent character overall, and you can sympathize quite easily. You get a nice look at her backstory, and seeing the unfortunate life she's had to lead.

The story of this short campaign isn't anything too crazy or blockbuster like. The narrative features Fetch and her brother Brent, showing how they get mixed up in some gang related activities. This stems from her brothers affiliation with a suspicious drug dealer. Her brother spends the majority of the story freaking out and being stressed, with Fetch being the one taking the reigns and trying to deal with the situation. She attempts to form flimsy relationships on the way, which seem to work out a lot less than you'd hope for. Throughout the game you see her used by someone else for their own goals, as well as her tragic angle in the story. It's an interesting and engaging dynamic and works well.

Now, while the story is done well and it's definitely something you want to see through to the end, it's also quite predictable at most points and pretty straight forward. I think this is something that probably won't shock you all, considering this is just a shorter DLC. The missions you go on throughout the game have various objectives for you to complete, much of which are pretty similar to what you played through in InFamous Second Son. One moment you'll be trying to flee from the D.U.P. and the next you'll be hunting down a target whether they be a conduit or not. They aren't the most depth filled missions, and while they're different enough from one another they really don't vary all that much.

Despite the story being an entertaining, narrow ride, the gameplay provides quite a lot of fun. The gameplay is very similar and uses the same foundations that Second Son set up. So, if you enjoyed that aspect of Second Son, you'll no doubt enjoy this DLC. Well, unless you're a communist who didn't enjoy using the neon powers in Second Son, then your mileage may vary before you're thrown into the god damn gulag, where you belong. You animal. Fetch of course only has her neon powers, so you won't have access to a bunch of different abilities like Delsin did. She does, however, get some super charged neon abilities at her disposal. One ability allows her to use the neon power to run up walls and through the air as she pleases (This is unlimited). a stasis field for protection, a large projectile attack, melee attacks and of course an ultimate ability that you can use every so often.

The story of First Light only has about a 5 hour run before you've cleared it, though there is plenty of plot and entertaining dialogue and quips along the way. The game has it's own style that sets it apart from Second Son, and it's homed in on throughout. After that 5 hours of narrative, there's around another 4-5 hours of side content that you can dig into as well. Much like Second Son, there are lumens to collect, graffiti to tag, drones to destory, dead hooker bodies to hide along with mountains of cocaine to consume and races to compete in.

The world in this game is just one giant map pretty much instead of several areas like in Second Son, but there is plenty of space to explore. I think searching out the lumens is pretty fun, and is an important piece of the game to buff your powers up before you delve deeper into the narrative. I spent a couple of hours just hunting through the map looking for them and was enjoying myself for the majority of the search. The map is designed well and it's interesting how they've ingrained your powers into the area.

The game also has several arena areas that unlock the further you venture into the game. These areas are horde style places, where you either have to save hostages or fight off waves of enemies. In this arenas as a bonus you can use either Delsin or Fetch if you own Second Son before buying this DLC. These areas allow you to use the good or evil powers on top of the abilities from the stories of both games, and adds a new element of entertainment to playing. It has a very arcade like feel to it, and there are leader-boards available for you to try and climb up the ranks if you so wish.

Overall, I quite enjoyed playing through First Light. It's very similar to what we got with Second Son and hits all the same beats that we all enjoyed from it. While I wasn't really anywhere near as invested in Fetch's story and plight like I was with Delsins, it was still very entertaining, endearing and engorging my genitals with blood, oh god... engaging throughout. This DLC is an awesome way for people to get back to the world of conduit filled Seattle, and gives a new way for people who are unfamiliar with the series to get a taste of what they could expect. I would definitely recommend this to you guys, and hope that if you do check it out that you, too, enjoy it!

Thanks for stopping by to check out my review. Appreciate it!

I honestly forgot this even came out after Second Sun. Idk, I remember getting the first Infamous for free after Playstation's network was down for like 2 months all those years ago, but could never get into it!

Ah, that's a bummer. I really enjoyed the first InFamous game back in the day, the second one was trash though and turned me off for awhile. Second Son and First Light are really entertaining, however. If you ever decide you want to get into the series I would just grab Second Son. It stands alone from the first two games and you can run through it with no knowledge of InFamous 1/2.

Second son was a great game but I skipped this dlc.

If you can score it on sale you'd definitely be happy with it, man. It's just a nice 5 hour injection of more Second Son fun pretty much. I wouldn't pay $20 for it, but if it's on sale for $5-10 then I'd say grab it.

The game also has several arena areas that unlock the further you venture into the game. These areas are horde style places, where you either have to save hostages or fight off waves of enemies.

This will definitely familiarize the player with the combat styles and facilitate improvement, I can go hours sometimes, fighting off waves of enemies in games.
