The fourth wall and video games

in #gaming5 years ago

Since the 1700s there has been talk about the fourth wall which could be defined as a kind of invisible wall that separates all the events that happen between actors or characters of any theatrical or literary work of the spectator. With the passing of the years this concept was taken to the present time, reason why the series, comics, movies and videogames would have a great protagonism with the fourth wall.

When the video games were just in diapers you could not identify a fourth wall in them, this was because they lacked a story or argument, however, over time they evolved in such a way that sometimes have completely broken this wall, making the game relates directly to the player.

This means that there are video games that have knocked down the fourth wall, making the experience of the gameplay is really impressive, but I'm sure you are a little intrigued and want to know which are those games that have achieved that goal, in this post I'll show you three great examples which you can check when you like.

We will start with one of the old school created by Blizzard Entertainment, a company that has always been characterized by making excellent video games, one of them is called The Lost Vikings for the Super Nintendo, in it we can control some Vikings who have different skills that allow us to pass through certain difficulties at each of their levels.

In these types of game it is inevitable to repeat several times a level because for whatever reason we will die in the attempt, this is when the characters you control start complaining talking to you directly, cataloguing you as clumsy and desperate because they are annoyed to repeat so many times the same thing.

Now we continue with a title that is the favorite of many, this is Metal Gear Solid for PlayStation 1, this video game contains epic bosses which have a great protagonism within the game, one of them completely breaks the fourth wall making the player is totally impacted, it is Psycho Mantis.

When we face him he tells us that he is going to read our minds with his psychic powers, that's when he reads your memory card where you save your games, if you have a block of data related to a Konami game such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night will speak directly to you indicating that you like that video game.

Finally, we have a psychological horror video game well known for its extensive saga, Silent Hill, but this time we will talk specifically about Shattered Memories with its test which abruptly breaks the fourth wall due to its enormous interaction with the player.

From the beginning of the game we have a kind of psychological test in which we must answer certain questions, depending on our answers the game will change according to our personality, this makes it a totally unique experience because the game itself evaluates us to get right in our main fears.

Even at the end of the video game encourages you to play again to get to know you better and change the experience completely, simply something unique and impressive.

These were some video games that completely knocked down the fourth wall, surely some of them will have impressed you by playing them at the time and if you have never done it is too late to do so. Have you ever played a video game that has broken the fourth wall? Tell me your experience in the comments section.
