Apex Legends: A Battle Royale Set in the Titanfall Universe
The cat is out of the bag because Respawn Entertainment and EA have officially released their latest stab at the battle royale genre: Apex Legends. After the game was hinted at last week, it was just a matter of time before we finally got our hands on the next game in the Titanfall universe. But, don't expect it to be a Titanfall 3 as there aren't any giant mechs this time. While set as a free-to-play shooter, Apex Legends introduces Respawn's own take on the battle royale model.
The 'Legends' in Apex Legends
The game's cast of eight unique characters, called 'Legends', all use specific skills that open up to different types of playstyles. For example, Wraith is a Legend who is able to move and resposition to safety by travelling through the 'void' while Gibraltar uses a variety of shields to protect allies and block enemy fire.
The Lead Producer for Apex Legends, Drew McCoy said: "We're building a game that is not only going to deliver a fun and memorable experience at launch, but something we can keep growing for a long time to come."
Gameplay consists of the familiar squad-based formula, and in Apex Legends teams have full control on where they choose to drop with the Jumpmaster system. Players can also revive each other at one-time use locations which Respawn are aptly calling 'Respawn Beacons'. For players who had trouble figuring out which scope went with a particular weapon in PUBG, Apex Legends has gear automatically attach to the appropriate weapons once a player loots them. An intuitive Ping system is also available in Apex Legends, as players will be able to simply communicate where enemies, weapons and ammo are located to fellow teammates.
Do We Need to Worry About Microtransactions?
With Apex Legends using a free-to-play model, microtransactions are a part of the picture. Unfortunately, EA doesn't have a great track record with microtransactions but it looks like this time they are soley being use for cosmetics. The Apex Legends Store currently allows players to purchase bundles of 'Apex Coins' for set prices. These coins are used to buy specific weapon, character skins or packs that include a random selection of lower and higher tier cosmetic items.
The game is currently available to play through Origin on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Respawn has also stated that first season for Apex Legends will begin in March.
