Melbourne Esports Open Set to Return in August
After the success of last year's inaugural event, it was recently announced that the Melbourne Esports Open will be returning for its second year.
Hosted by esports organisation ESL, and live entertainment promoter TEG Live, the Melbourne Esports Open will run from Saturday 31 August to Sunday 1 September. It will once again be held at Melbourne and Olympic Parks but this time, the event will be expanding across Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and Melbourne Arena.
The Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula said in a press release:
"Victoria is Australia's major events capital -- and we're proud that the Melbourne Esports Open is returning to Melbourne and Olympic Parks in 2019."
After welcoming approximately 12,000 esports fans in 2018, the Melbourne Esports Open looks to be building on its featured esports titles, with Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege joining the list of AAA title tournaments.
The event will continue to host the finals for the League of Legends Oceanic Pro League (OPL) and the Australian Overwatch Contenders series. But fans can also compete or watch tournaments for several other titles, including Fortnite and Pokémon, over the two day event.
2019's event will also see the return of the 'JB Hi-Fi Game On Zone'. Last year's Game On Zone featured a number of upcoming game demos and according to JB Hi-Fi CEO, Richard Murray the company is, "looking forward to bringing gaming fans an even bigger hands on gaming experience..."
For those who can't attend both days, the headline tournaments for the OPL and Overwatch Contenders Australia will take place over the two separate days. Rod Laver Arena will be hosting the OPL finals on the Saturday and the Overwatch Contenders Australia Finals will take place on the Sunday.
Tickets for the event will be available to the general public from 2:00pm (local) Monday 15 April via Ticketek but presale tickets will be available through Telstra Thanks from 10:00am (local), Friday 12 April.
