Hero Realms deckbuilding game: My first exposure to this and already love it

in #gaming5 years ago

I have never heard of deckbuilding games and didn't even know what they were until last Monday. As many of you may recall I took a trip to one of our local board game cafes and since there was only two of us the owner decided to introduce me to this game.

The way the game works is that there are a bunch of different classes that you can choose and your hit points and base cards in your starting deck are different depending on which class you choose.

Aside from the first turn you will always draw 5 cards from your personal deck. There are also 5 exposed cards in the middle of the table that everyone can buy. Since a lot of your 10 "base cards" are actually currency, everyone has an equal chance to get involved with the cards you can purchase. The cards in the middle are much more powerful than the ones you start the game with and for the most part the 10 you start with are kind of worthless and the idea is to build your deck by getting good cards from the center.

The ultimate objective is to kill your enemies and some players are better at healing than others although some of the cards that can be purchased also have healing capabilities.

Up to 5 people can play this game in this mode and there is also expansion packs that allow players to team up against a boss such as a dragon. Obviously the bosses have incredibly powerful cards and a very high level of hit points (as you would expect from a boss.) I have not yet done this but am looking forward to giving it a go.

As far as I can tell so far there is a lot of initial strategy as far as card purchases are concerned, and since you will always draw 5 cards from your own personal discard deck it is very important to get good cards and to get rid of the ones that are weak such as single monetary units or weapons that are low powered. An awful lot of the game is also luck because everyone's deck starts out loaded with damn near useless cards that end up in your hand and can kind of ruin a round.

Even though I have only played this game 4 times I think about it constantly and am looking forward to doing so again on Friday. I didn't get hooked by the Magic: the Gathering that a lot of nerdy pals of mine did, so I am a little late to the party - however, if you live in USA or Canada (probably EU as well) this card game should be really cheap and easy to find and comes highly recommended by moi.

I really like deck building games, but I always feel like they're a little clunky and unrefined yet. Pathfinder Adventures, for instance, can be a really good experience, but it's nearly unplayable due to setup and takedown times. I really like the cooperative experiences, though.

How long do you think it takes to set up for this?

If you organized the deck properly when you put it away I would say it takes no time at all. If you mixed up the classes' starter cards it could be problematic. We played within 2 mins of getting the box off the shelf bc the owner is OCD and everything was impeccibly organized.

That's cool, then. A lot of other games have an insane amount of setup to get into; Pathfinder Adventures still takes like 20 minutes to set up even with a relatively familiar player (my group took a hour just to unpack the box, much less understand the rules), and if there's anything wrong with class decks you're just out of luck.

i witnessed a Legacy game last night. I never heard of this type of game but it looks to be really good. A board game you can only play once. amazing.

Is it a new deck building game or one that has been out for a while?

What do you think makes this game so appealing to you, but is different then magic the gathering since you never got into that. I ask because I never got into magic, but enjoyed pokemon.

i don't know if this game has been around for a while. It may have been, but i haven't been as far as knowing about it is concerned. I think my major attraction to it is that physical games are coming back into fashion and I can totally support that especially since i have joined this group of pals that are playing board games now.

Wow, that looks really interesting. I never really got into Magic: The Gathering either, but I do play Blizzards Hearthstone occasionally and I used to play a mobile game called Hellfire: The summoning. Sadly the latter is belly up now. Steem has a card trading game that has been gaining a lot of traction on the blockchain. I have made some decent money selling some of my more rare cards that I knew I would never be able to level up. https://steemmonsters.com

a pal of mine goes on and on about Hearthstone, if that is also a deckbuilding game perhaps i will give that a try also.

The cards look great, 5 different classes. This looks complicated, and that might be the challenge and fun for you. They should create a computer game especially for me. ;)

Star realms exists and is free to try. You should check that out since it is a good intro to what deckbuilding games actually are and well, its free.

A deck-building game is a card game where deck construction is the main focus of gameplay. [1] This is similar to collectible card games (CCGs) where each player has their own card. However, unlike CCG, cards are not sold in random packages, and most cards are built during the game, not before the game. Usually, cards provide a type of game currency that allows players to buy more cards to add to their decks.

This is all very new to me. I think that card games are coming back into fashion. a bit of a renaissance of sorts :)

Hey that's an interesting game, I guess similar to UNO , a bit childish comparison but anyways I guess we all should spare out time to play such games once in a while .
It is sort of refreshing.
Keep flourishing.

The only similarity between this and UNO is that they are both card games. haha
