And Up We Go!

Logged in 3 more wins this week, 1 more in solos and 2 in solo ‘Getaways’, with plenty of top 5s. Building is comping more natural, though I do think I need to practice being calm and more strategic in build battles. I’ve also taken great experience from watching pro scrims and the importance of high material counts late-game. Overall, I’m feeling pretty good at this point, with a noticeable confidence when it comes to the macro workings of the game and performing in general.

This is where we zoom in from macro-performance to tighten up the scenario-specific play and situational capacity. This will likely span a number of posts as I list all the pieces of the puzzle that lead to more sharp and immediate play.

Worshipping the Right Side

Fortnite’s aiming system relies on 3rd person, over the shoulder shooting. This means that when peek out from walls or ramps to shoot, you expose far less of the right body to shoot from a right corner than you do when trying to shoot from the left side with your left body. At first, this comes as a pretty straightforward piece of advice that isn’t difficult to follow. The trick is understanding how that plays out for the enemy, who may also be peeking from the right side. It isn’t just about being in a good position, it’s also about putting the other actively in a poorer one.

Common scenarios where this plays out is in-house battles where you and another opponent are peeking against each other from right corners across from each other. By all measures, besides gun load outs, your positions are identical. Restricting the others’ options by putting down ramps right in from of them and moving upwards gives you more control and exact knowledge of what right side to shoot from.

Don’t Peek Twice

The peeking game is another similar-level-situation. When facing another opponent who is fully aware of your position and isn’t being 3rd-partied, playing hide-n-peek is a bad idea. Build out your base and vary the options you’ll be peeking from, forcing the opponent the waste time figuring out your next spot. Another razor-sharp edge that’ll come in handy in mid-late game.

Shoot. Build.

I’ve written about this time and time again. There are so many 1v1 firefights where it really comes down to sheer luck who will come out on top. Anyone’s basic impulse is to pound down that right trigger and pray to the RNG gods that you survive. Again, 50/50 scenarios are not the place you want to be in. Shoot, build. Even if the opponent looks like a potato bot full of more tubers, there’s nothing stopping them from taking the half second from being shot, swing around, and blasting you in the face. There are too many variables in Fortnite to concede a loss to one that is highly preventable.

Shoot. Build. Shoot. Build. Even a single wall-ramp combo will suffice in most situations.

That’s all boys 'n girls. I’d also like to dive into duos at some point soon. If you’re on console and looking to jump into partnered games, give me a holler!
