BEHIND THE DOORS: This War of Mine Walkthrough, Day 7

Yesterday was by far, the most dangerous escapade. We just decided to do something totally way out of line, heading straight to snipers' den. I actually thought there was only one sniper before I embarked on the journey but from the frequency of the shots, the rate, the distance, the angles it came from, it's obvious it is not just one sniper protecting the area from bandits - like Katia. Fortunately, we were gracefully lucky. Emerging unscathed and even getting some items for making our weapons needed for self defense, bullet casings and gunpowder. I sincerely hope it is worth the risk.

Katia arrived to a gloomy atmosphere. I had placed Pavle on the watch as the recovering Bruno slept on the bed. Good news is, Bruno is all well and good now, just a little bit sad and hungry - which he can manage for the moment. But Pavle? Exhausted! His deep sighs can be heard from the door and even the exhaustion is apparent from his posture. Katia starts to question my decision to place him on guard and says maybe I pushed him a little too hard. I can't possibly risk loosing all we've been toiling for just for a short nap, No! I think I'm justified. Even an arm chair rest is a dangerous game to play, we have been raided even with a guard on duty. But now that Katia is back, he can have his much needed rest. I'm disappointed in Bruno though, he has had his recovery but he didn't want to give up his bed until I made him to. Sleep Pavle, Sleep.

I think it's high time we put our scavenged items to good use. Bullet casings and gun powder, what can they do? Katia goes to the Metal workshop to check for things she can make and.... Nothing. The closest to a weapon that we can make is the knife and the items are not even among the requirements. Surely they can't only be useful for a trade. She checks the improved workshop and still nothing. I must have mistook the required item for the bullet casings and gun powder. It's not that the requirement is labeled though, it's just an icon with no name and no hint whatsoever but it really looks like a gun powder. So we've only just risked our life for nothing. Sighs! Katia heads back to the metal workshop to at least see if she can make anything and yes she can. But we have to choose between a crowbar, a lock pick and a shovel.

Both the Crowbar and Lock pick do a similar job - They open doors.

But what are the differences?

Well, a crowbar works like a CROWBAR, it opens doors slowly and loudly and it can open a few doors before it is rendered useless. In contrast, a lock pick can open a door quickly and quietly, sadly it is single use. A shovel on the other hand is used to clear rubbles, only that it is relatively faster than the use of hand and far more efficient in the advent of limited time.

We can decide to opt for Shovel which will help us carry our night scavenges faster. Like the previous night where we had to spend undue time clearing rubbles only to find out there's a "wormhole" at the other end and it was already too late to make up for the lost time after we had realised. Also, there are a lot of rubbles in the house which needs clearing in other to get to the doors behind it; On the other hand, it will be a pointless mission to clear the rubbles with a shovel and be unable to open the door because they are all locked. That's that about that, not considering a shovel.

A Lock pick is faster, and silent - perfect for stealth operations. But it's not like we have a garage filled with materials to continue making lock picks after every single use. Materials are scarce and should be used judiciously. I'm just thinking how I'll use the knife when I finally get the material, I'll make sure to only attack in self defense because I can't afford to lose it. The crowbar seems to be the best option for now, simply because it can open few doors (not one, not two) before rendered inefficient. Although it works slower and louder, I think the ability to use it a couple of times far offsets the disadvantages faced. Also, before it stops working, I would have gotten more materials to make another one.

The now recovered Bruno tells a short description of himself and how his optimism never thought the war could possibly happen. Although he had heard scary daily news all along, rumours and conflicts, he never knew it would escalate this far. In fact, he had even sworn it would never happen. But the world is an unpredictable place isn't it? Never say never.

I MISS THE SADNESS

Weird I know it is. Yeah, say all you want but the closest my characters have gone to being depressed is "Sad". They've never gone very sad like they used to in my previous plays. Once that happened, the fairly cheerful character would sit the "very sad" character down, then they would sit and gist. They lay bare their hearts before each other, offer a shoulder to cry on, grief and get up feeling unburdened. It is the perfect moment to reflect on the past and discuss the future. For a kid character, the story is a little bit different, she doesn't "sober chat' like her adult counterparts. You only need to get him/her a ball, toy, swing or a skipping rope and that's it, the kids' soul lifting magic. The reason they've not gone very sad is beyond me, maybe because of the daily food available for them to eat or the availability of meds and bandages in their times of need or perhaps, I am a good leader after all. Grins

Now Bruno tries to make good use of his new found crowbar by testing it on a door on the top floor (The fifth). The crowbar gets to action and opens the door in approximately 4 seconds. I'm so impressed! They said slower but they should have been more accurate by saying it doesn't open it instantly unlike the lock pick. Four seconds is more than enough for me and I'm beginning to think lock picks should only be used in critical situations. He gets in and he is met by a rubble which takes a lot of time to clear off. A crowbar and is what we really need to overcome resistances. The cupboard behind the rubbles is equally locked but the crowbar gets to action again, that's two uses. Fortunately, the crowbars decreasing lifespan can be checked and it has not even gotten to half. From my estimate, it could be used 6 times! In other good news, we found two lock picks and some materials in the cupboard. Bye bye to resistances!

THE NIGHT IS HERE

Say hello to the central square

I noticed something, I didn't before now. Actually, the space available for items in each character's backpack is stated right before the hunt and I've overlooked it all along. Bruno's backpack can only take as much as 10 items while the others can take 12. We are visiting the central square which hitherto, was the attraction, monuments and even packs old buildings for tourism. It's not a marketplace for traders. There's huge amount of materials, meds, some ingredients for food, possible trade but caution is advised.

Going by the description, I'd say not much has changed. Bruno arrives at the location, it is my first time getting here. It is typically busy - a marketplace you can call it. He is perplexed though, how people flocked this place amidst the war. He sights trash and he peruses it. He finds the regular materials but with the gunpowder and shell casings and he is made to ignore them, he only takes some regular material. The backpack is very limited so only needed items should get in.

As he makes his way through the "crowd", traders beckon on him to patronize them. The first one was a seller of wood, broken guitar, gun and many others. Useless I must say. Oh! I took a jewelry with me which I found in the house earlier, they said it's a good trade item that's why I took it with me since this is the den of traders. The second wanted to trade moonshine, booze and alcohol but no. The third? A variety of vegetables, I'll pass.

There's a building that's apparently full of needed items and Bruno scurries there. I really love the environment in this marketplace, the noise that almost make you want to ignore the distant sounds of gunshots and the windy atmosphere that constantly tilts the tentacles of the fire burning at the middle of square. Sadly, the door is locked! If only we had brought our lock pick or crowbars - it's not like we lacked any of the two. I guess it's just our bad day. Bruno makes his way back. But we can't just leave empty handed, Bruno returns to the trash he had earlier searched through and packs all the items then he goes to the wood seller and exchanges his jewelry for a broken guitar - they said its nothing that can't be fixed. We can't just leave empty handed. The night is cut short and Bruno returns home as there's nothing left to do.

If there's any consolation for the wasted night, the adventure.

Sort:

One of the games that put your head to work on critical thinking. I played it before and I had this impression that the game is somewhat "tiring". But don't get me wrong, it's a good game.

The first time I got a shovel it felt like I got a legendary sword or something. Before that, my characters only clean up rubbles with their hands that took forever and causing injuries as well, which was a bad idea even for Boris (the physically big and strong dude).

This and Frostpunk, 11bit studios seem to love making moral dilemma as some kind of their signature.
Noice read!

Wow! Finally, a player! Or should I say "Erstwhile player", either way, it's nice.

We just have to appreciate the little tools we get because sometimes, survival may depend them.
