Two new Coleco Mini Arcades are now available through Kickstarter!

In the early 80’s, the next best thing to owning an actual arcade cabinet was…well it was probably owning a ColecoVision. But the next, next best thing was the line of Coleco tabletop arcade games. These machines were portable versions of popular arcade games like Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Galaxian and Frogger that used simple LCD graphics to replicate their big brothers as well as the tech of the era could. Just under ten of these were originally released and have become highly collectible in the past decade.

Well I’m happy to report that the Coleco Tabletop arcade game is back with two new games offered up through Kickstarter, known as Coleco Evolved! Before you get too excited, they’re not re-releases of the originals or new and improved versions. This release is two new games that use the same shell as the originals to present Rainbow Brite and Robotech games.

The Rainbow Brite game is an overhead RPG adventure, while Robotech is a side-scrolling shoot-em up. Each machine features a colored shell and original artwork and much more horsepower under the hood compared to the originals. The Coleco Evolved games will feature a full-color LCD screen, more powerful hardware, improved buttons and a built-in rechargeable battery.

The Kickstarter is live now and will end in just over three weeks from today, and some of the better deals have already sold out. For a single game, you’ll pay $45 for Rainbow Brite (early backer discount) or $55 for Robotech. For $105 you can get both machines in a bundle and for serious collectors, you can get these games in gold (Robotech) or silver (Rainbow Brite) shells for $200 each. Only 50 of these limited editions are being produced. Shipping for one game is $20 or $30 for two (a bit high if you ask me).

These have already doubled their original goal of $30,000, but it seems unlikely that they’ll reach their stretch goal (surprise tier) of $180,000 in the next three weeks.
