[Rogue Retro Gaming] Donkey Kong jr (Arcade)

in #gaming6 years ago

In this instalment of Rogue Retro Gaming, we are going to talk about another arcade Nintendo game and a sequel to yesterday's arcade game Donkey Kong Jr which was developed and published by Nintendo in 1982. This is the only Nintendo game where Mario (Jumpman) is the villain character to be defeated.

Plot
You play as Donkey kong Jr. (DK Jr) whose objective is to free his dad (Donkey Kong) that is trapped in a cage by Mario (Jumpman), while you climb vines, bands of conveyor belts or chain links, Mario is setting free piranhas, birds that drop eggs in mid-air or pulling a lever to shock you with electricity from atop to try and damage you, you have to climb to the top collecting a key to set your dad free.

Graphics, sounds and gameplay
Graphics in the game are great and in on par with the design for Mario on the NES, things look exactly what they are supposed to be and you don't end up asking yourself 'what am I looking at?'. Backgrounds on all levels are black which is a nice contrast with the colours of the graphics in the games and gives it a neat look.

Sounds are my favourite part of the game, it got me from the start screen that is a rendition of Toccata and Fugue in d minor by J. S. Bach to the transition screen between the levels that is a rendition of Offenbach's can-can, and compositions made for the game by Yukio Kaneoka. There is only one stage where I found the sounds annoying and borderline unbearable when you are on the conveyor belts, other than that sounds are great.

Gameplaywise, the game can be classified as a platformer since you are moving and be jumping around platforms and enemies, you have no offensive move so most of the time you be avoiding enemies, jumping or climbing into vines, there is a way to get rid of enemies, all over the game you'll see fruit that gives you points if you grab it but when in stages where you have to climb things these fruits also drops down to the bottom part of the stage when you collected and then disappear, if these fruits come into contact with any enemy it will disappear. There are essentially 4 different stages all with their own risks and way of getting to the top.

This game is super fun, I certainly recommended, the sounds are great and it is pretty funny too. Lucky for you there are a lot of options if you want to play Donkey Kong Jr. since it has been ported to a lot of systems, including non-Nintendo ones like Colecovision, so a version of this game shouldn't run you more than 10 USD.
