5 LIES Games Used To Get Your MONEY! - Gaming Top 5 - Part 76.

Game devs and publishers adopt many different methods to lure us to buy there products...

Game companies are sometimes so desperate to recoup there investment in making a game that they will do just about anything to achieve this goal. Some game companies (Cough Konami, cough) are so obsessed with financial greed that they will often step over some moral boundaries us gamers frown upon.

So here are 5 Lies games used to get your money.

5 – Philips CD-I.

  • When this console was launched back in 1991, it was way ahead of its time and predated the PlayStation by 3 years. It boasted the fact that it could show full motion video in games.
It didn't do so well because the games were all horrible, but more so was there advertising.
When the console launched in back in 91, the retail on it was tagged at $300. every poster, TV spot, TV add, magazine publication.... all had this console advertised at $300. However, when you actually went to the store to claim this new bit of console tech, it was actually priced at $1'000. And it wasn't a mistake by the store either. The stores that sold the console were all told to sell it for $1'000 per unit, despite the fact that Phillips were advertising it to be $700 less.
This was a blatant attempt at getting gamers in the store to buy it by creating a lot of hype and false advertising. This was the consoles ultimate downfall and the main reason why no one remembers it or cares about it, as it was a commercial flop.

4 – Bubsy 3D

  • Bubsy was one of the first characters that made it into the 3D realm back in 1996 on the PlayStation.
When it launched in October of 96, the critics hated the game, but despite this, on some copies of the games cover art, the publishers would add words or quotes from the same critics.
Stunning, Original, Bubsy climbs back to the top. When in actual fact it was all taken way out of context... ''It is Stunningly bad'', ''Very unoriginal'', ''Bubsy climbs onto the discount pile''.
The publishers purposely did this to try and trick you into buying the game. Not only is the game bad, but it is considered to be one of the worst games from the PS1 era, and there are a lot of games from that time. So you can imagine how unbelievably bad the game was.

3 – Ouya.

  • Just to think, even I almost fell for this one. This console was a Kickstarter funded piece of trash that too many people bought.
It was highlighted at E3 back in 2013, with its creators saying that it comes pre loaded with over 100 games, was the size of a small child's fist and would be the next best thing in home gaming.
The idea was that the console was to be small and discrete, to its credit, it was, but the version that was shipped out to everyone was made from plastic, so light that if you occupied to many of the connections, the thing would slide of what ever surface it was on because of the weight of the cables. But worst of all was it was an android based system, just like your phone, but with more connect-ability, and most of the 'pre installed' games were demos, and the rest of the games were very basic puzzle games you can download of the app store for free. All the games you saw at E3 on this system were all paid for, from the app/play store.
Because the creators didn't deliver what they promised, combined with the rise of smart TV's and android enabled TV's, the Ouya became obsolete very quickly. It didn't help that the console was discontinued shortly after release, which pissed of many backers who never received what they paid for.

2 – Star Wars Battlefront 2 – 2017

  • What else can be said about this game that hasn't already been said? The player base they once had has all but gone with only a handful of daily users occupying the servers, compared to the millions they had just after launch.
Not only did EA promise gamers they learned there lessons from the first battlefront game, which they didn't. They just made it 10 times worse. But after the recent removal of the lootboxes system at the end of 2017, EA went and told gamers that they had removed the ''Pay to Win''mechanic the loot boxes were renowned for, and the progression system had been improved for those gamers that don't want to use loot boxes at all. When they added the lootboxes back into the game, after supposedly correcting all the errors gamers and fans of the franchise complained about, nothing had been changed and the progression system was almost identical.
EA just told us this in order to get gamers playing again and buy more loot boxes.

1 – Xbox One.

  • As good as the Xbox one is, it was still not enough to help Microsoft from going into full damage control after its initial launch.
When it was released, it was only sold with the Kinect and 'Always on', meaning you had to constantly be connected to the internet in order to play any games. The kinetic was better than the 360 version, but is was still horrifically optimised and Microsoft soon ditched it permanently. And the always on feature was soon patched for those that didn't want to be connected all the time. But the biggest one was before and soon after its release. Microsoft were giving $30'000 to YouTuber channels who put the Xbox one in a good light, highlighting how good the Kinect was and the benefits of the always on feature. It didn't stop there... oh no.. Microsoft were offering bonuses to videos that did the same thing, they were paying reviews in magazines, blogs and other social media outlets in order to persuade potential customers into buying the console that many gamers hated to begin with, because of the bad Kinect and the always on feature.
This all in turn didn't help as sales were worse that that of the 360 at launch, and eventually, microshaft caught on and ultimately gave the gamers what they wanted, not what they thought we wanted.
Because of what Microsoft did, it led to many changes in social media outlets, like YouTube, when dealing with sponsored videos or paid advertisement. Many of the terms of use, conditions and all that jazz had to be updated, so potential consumers will know before hand if a review is biased or not.

It is amazing what publishers and manufacturers will do and say to sell a product. Some of these examples are ridiculous. But unfortunately it is not limited to the gaming industry, but almost every industry where there is a potential for money to be made. Dyson not to long ago paid a fare few YouTubers, bloggers and such a substantial amount of money to demonstrate and promote there latest vacuum cleaner, which backfired massively, on not only Dyson, but some of the you tubers too because it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.
Some of you may even remember my rant about a Greedy ISP not too long ago. When cancelling my contract, they would try and sell me on deals to stop me from leaving, despite the fact they would lie to me every time I called or a bill came through that was higher than what they promised.
It just goes to show that you have to be cautious in any purchase you make, small or large, and do the research before you hand over any money as you may be sorely disappointed.

If you have ever been cheated by a game, publisher, dev, or anything like these examples... then please let us know in the comments below.

Thanks for reading.

Cool I liked the way you express yourself, I'm glad that there are more people talking about video games around here. Did you know that there are strong rumors that a new Battlefront will be presented at E3? What do you think? I think it's too early for a new one

With all the flak EA received from there customers and fans of the franchise, even Disney, because of the 'pay to win' mechanic in the loot boxes, I will be very surprised if Disney allow them to make another game bearing the Star Wars brand.
its not impossible, but if they do, some big changes would have to be implemented if Disney agreed to it.

I agree, I personally think that was what killed the game, and well let's hope that Disney did not ruin it this time

I lol'ed to Xbox One being n.1
