Can it Play Crysis?

  • When I say that this game is infamous, 'Can it play Crysis?' is the resulting question that PC gamers, builders, enthusiasts and even industry manufacturers would ask when new hardware would come out, When they bought a new PC, they built a new PC or upgraded there current PC.
The game was so resource hungry that when it was launched, there was no computer on earth that could run it at the maximum graphical settings at a reasonable playable frame rate. Even NASA tried to give it a go. They came close, but failed. Even with a super computer back in 2008.
for many years, even to this day, Crysis is used as a benchmark for which new hardware is tested with. Yes today's hardware can run Crysis no problem, but it is still used to measure performance when comparing with older hardware to find out how much the new stuff has improved.
It was actually nearly a full 5 years after the game was released that hardware caught up and was able to run the game as it was intended. The Nvidia GTX 690 was a 'Dual GPU' graphics card that had double the processing power of the GTX 680 as it had 2 chips running in SLI on a single board and was running the all new Kepler architecture which had massive improvements over the previous generation Fermi. But even so, the GTX 690 was only able to produce between 25 – 30 FPS. While this is playable, by today's standards, this is very low. But each generation of GPU that followed improved the performance and playability of the game to the point that today, mid range GPU's such as the GTX 1070 or the RX 580 can now run the game at full graphical settings at a steady 80+ frames per second.

The Game.

  • Despite its age, and it running on older Direct X 10 software, it still boasts some of the most impressive graphics when compared with modern titles. From simple stuff like the water mechanics and how it interacts with anything it touches, to blades of grass and full trees blowing in the wind.
What's more is the destructible environment and assets throughout the game. Buildings, huts, fences, walls, and even lookout towers can all be destroyed. Grass, Trees, and bushes can all be destroyed, along with any wildlife found in the game.
Combine the high definition textures and some awesome lighting, the graphics still hold up when compared to today's offerings.

  • Another aspect is the animations that make the whole game come together. The facial graphics are something to be admired but considering the entire game was made without motion tracking or facial tracking, it is impressive all the same.
The movement of the characters in the game are very fluidic and smooth for the most part, a little glitchy every now and then, but that is more down to the AI of the NPC's when you first interact with them.
Mechanics such as the 'Maximum Armour' which allows you to be hit more before you die, 'Maximum Strength' that allows you to grab and throw NPC's, jump higher and be able to absorb large falls, 'Cloak' that makes you almost invincible, combined with the fact that each of these abilities only last for a certain amount of time before your power is drained and you have to wait for it to replenish before using it again, this all adds up to make something that has only really been seen in the Crysis games. It makes the whole game more interesting as it gives you the option to play the game as you see fit, weather that be balls to the wall action or as stealth as possible. There is even tranquillisers so you can go through the game and not kill anyone but the aliens. Again, something that had not really been seen before in any other game before this.

  • The Narrative, although a little cliché, works very well in this game. The basic outline is that scientist uncovered some alien artefacts and a structure on a remote island, the Korean military has occupied the island to take or study what was found, and you and your team are sent in to find and rescue certain characters and find out what happened on the island. As I said, a little cliché.
Regardless, the basic outline of the story is what helps to make the game work as good as it does when combined with the playable mechanics that are available at your disposal.
Eventually, you discover that there is a large and ancient alien structure on the island that has been awoken and aliens are starting to take over. You have to stop them. For the best part, the story is finished there, but at the same time, there are many aspects of the narrative that leave it wide open for a sequel, which it did.

  • Although the game is restricted to a first person perspective, it still feels and plays very smoothly on either a Keyboard and mouse, or a gamepad. (though you should use Keyboard and Mouse for best performance). From the start to the end, the game is constant fast paced action with something new around the corner after each section is complete.
Some people may complain about cut scenes in games, but in this, they just enhance the overall experience and immerses you even further into the game. To put it another way, I was playing the game last night from about 8pm. I didn't notice the time and it was almost 2am when my other half wanted to come to bed. I had to stop playing, but it goes to show, that even after 10 years, the game is still very enjoyable to play and very entertaining.

Overall the game has well and truly stood the test of time. It was a technological marvel when it was released with government agencies getting involved with the game. 10 years on and the game is still very much playable and can stand next to today's titles in every aspect from graphics to mechanics and narrative.
While EA may say that 'single player' games are dying, this game is proof that a single player game can be enjoyed many years after its release, and many gamers do. It is a title that you can complete inside of a few days, leave it and do it all again a few months to a few years later, knowing the game will not loose any of its potency.

When the game was released, no computer on earth could play it as it was intended, and it is the only game since that holds that title. You will never hear 'Can it run GTA?' or 'Can it run Tomb raider?', because no one but the Crytek team know how to future proof a game in such a way that it gets its own Meme before meme's were a thing or its own phrase that the gaming community use on a daily basis.
It is a game that dwarfs all others in all aspects.

Farcry followed.

farcry was the precursor to Crysis, then it was sold to Ubisoft, along with a modified version of the Cryengine. which is still in use on there latest farcry 5 game.
but even so, Farcry still didn't have a lot of the mechanics that you see in this game., and Crysis borrowed others that were pioneered in Farcry such as weather impact on vegetation.

I remember that my old gtx 260 suffered with this game even so I enjoyed it a lot, it would be interesting to play it in my current rig

the game is on steam for about $10 i think... if you do get it and play it. i wouldn't mind knowing the results and the hardware you're using. let me know if you do.....

actually 19.99 but it's a good deal for such a good game

Well, my crappy PC can't run Crysis, thank you very much lol. But in all seriousness this review is top notch the one that Crysis really deserves after all these years, a lot of FPS games wouldn't be were they are with out this game, amazing review keep the good work coming!

cheers dude. i really appreciate it. thank you!

Hello sir @techmojo
I think Crysis it the most popular game. I must be play this game..

Thanks for sharing sir.

Crysis for the visual panache and overall attention to graphical detail, and Far Cry 2 for the interaction with everything in the game world - shooting leafs, setting fire to trees and grass and watching it spread, everything was so on point that it's a shame it was lost forever after that game - both for the series and other games as well.

Crysis 3 was far from a bad game, but the series had stagnated by then.

PS: Any chance of adding @gamingstation to your recommended blogs?

thanks for the comment dude. i will say, Ubisoft did add some cool mechanics to farcry 2. n I loved the crossbow weapon in Crysis 3. it was awesome, killing enemies while in camo mode.

and consider it done buddy. it will appear in all future posts.

Thank you! And keep up the great work, you make some awesome content at a really nice pace.

No worries, and cheers dude.

haha that would be a great idea. i want to use the gtx 1080 graphics card to have the best experience
