[Whack Gaming] The KSP Series #5 - Mods

in #gaming5 years ago

Welcome scientists and gamers to our new episode of The KSP Series! Last time, we talked about our Kerbol system where our little green Kerbals live. Every Thursday, I write this series and trying to connect science and gaming communities. I believe there are a lot of us gamers interested in our Cosmos and also I believe that there are some fellow scientists still feeling young and loving games. Hopefully, I will get some interest from you because KSP is not just a game, KSP can teach you about rocket building, space flights, space physics and many more. This is more a simulation than a game and that's why I can do this series.

In this post, I will write about mods I'm using for this game. I use a lot of mods to enhance the gameplay and make it in a way realistic. Some mods are not that realistic but I had to have them to ease my gameplay a bit. I'm telling you, this game is hard! :D Hopefully, this will help people to choose what mods to use to bring their gameplay on whole another level. I understand why some people love to play vanilla game but KSP got a lot of great mods that would be a shame not to try.

In our last episode, we talked about our Kerbol system and all the planets and moons that are in there. Currently, Kerbals built their Whack Space Station on Kerbin and are ready for their first missions. Whack Space Crew can't wait to start their first mission and the research of their home planet.

This time, we're going to take a pause from our whacky story and we're going to try to help others by explaining about the mods we're using and about game modes you can choose to play the game.

MODS

The best place to download mods for Kerbal Space Program is on this link. As this game wasn't perfect enough, so they had to create a lot of brilliant mods. Since I found out about them, I can't play vanilla game anymore. The KSP community is very big and very grateful for the game so they created a lot of mods to make your game feel as you want it. I seized this opportunity and I was really engaged in learning what are the best mods and what do they bring to my gameplay. I'm not saying that my mods are the best, but after a lot of hours of gameplay, I find these mods the best for me.

Let's get onto it, shall we? Below you can find the mods with a download link that I'm using and a bit of a description about them. Feel free to check them out and ask if you're interested in a better explanation. I will try to give my best :)

Kerbal Attachment System (KAS)

This is the mod you want if you want to make your work around the base a lot easier. It consists of small attachable parts and vinches. Your kerbanauts can attach various things on the vessel and make it much easier to control the whole base and resource transfers. A very useful mod for all various things to do in KSP.

Kerbal Inventory System (KIS)

This mod makes your inventory system much different. It lets you build things while you carry your tool in a backpack. If you got the right resources in your container and tools, you can build rockets or rovers in your flight. It gives you the possibility to use various size containers and attach them on your rocket. A really good mod to have for your space missions.

Kerbal Alarm Clock

This mod is the one you must have! While doing space missions and planet intersections, you will have to create a lot of maneuver nodes along the way. While some of those nodes arrive soon, we don't worry about it that much. But, when you start to do some bigger missions, those nodes can be missed and that's why you need your alarm. This alarm sets 1 minute before your node burn time so you can never ever miss it again. Very useful and very recommendable.

Science Alert

While you are trying to balance your rocket, do the orbit, do the maneuver and a lot of other stuff, you also need to do science research. Since it's sometimes hard to right-click on the instruments attached on your rocket, this mod makes your life easier and has a small window with alerts when you can do a scientific research for any insturment. A great tool to have!

Maneuver Node Evolved

Creating maneuver nodes and executing them perfectly is often a hard thing to do. Manually, you can't be that precise and that's why this mod is good. If you need to prograde for 0.1 deltaV, you can do it here and ease your pain. This mod is must have any without it, it's really hard to do long distance missions since you have to be that much precise.

Extraplanetary Launchpads

This is my favorite mod. It let's you build rockets, rovers and anything you want off your space station on Kerbin. If you want to build a rocket on Mun or Minmus to have minimal atmosphere impact on your fuel, this is the mod you want. Be aware, when you build a rocket, it is built without fuel and energy. I can't have my KSP Series without this mod becuase I want to colonize whole Kerboly system and it will be very hard to do it without this mod.

Docking Port Alignment Indicator

Weather you want to dock two spaceships in the space or you want to dock rover on your base, this mod allows you to be as precise as you can be. Without it, it's really hard to dock your spaceships and you know how costly is to hit other spaceship without a saved game before.

DMagic Orbital Science

Doing science is the most crucial thing to do here. It lets you build better rockets, upgrade your base, upgrade your community tech tree and many more. WIth this mod, you get to have a lot of science instruments that you can use to do scientific research and reports. The best thing about it SCANset that allows you to scan objects and see their biomes, altimetry and resources. If you want to build a base elsewhere, use this mod to find a perfect place for your base, full of resources.

Tweak Scale

Tweak scale mod is easy to figure out what is it here for. If your fuel container doesn't fit to your rocket, use this scale to make it smaller or bigger. The great thing is that it calculates how much fuel is it in resized parts so you can easily plan how much you need. I don't use this mod too often but sometimes I need it and then it saves the day so I recommend you to use it.

These are some of the mods I'm using. I wanted to mention a few of them that I really recommend and that will make your gameplay more amazing and a bit easier. If you have any questions about them and how to use them, don't hesitate on asking in the comment section below. I'll be glad to answer them if I can.

The game has a lot of other mods that I'm not using and don't know so feel free to mention them in comments, I would love to research more about other good mods and possibly implement them in my game. In the next series, we're going to have our first missions and we'll see what will happen and how much science we'll earn by researching our planet. Hopefully, we'll not have any casualties and our missions will be successful. Onward to the edge!

In a hope to spark your brain to think more about science and our Cosmos and as the gaming and science community is big on STEEM Blockchain I decided to make a bridge between them so I started The KSP Series.
