Super Radical Games: Uniracers

Today I will be discussing another underrated gem that doesn't get talked about nearly enough! I feel like this game was ahead of it's time with it's perfectly executed blend of racing and stunts.

Unlike a lot of games that have stunts as a separate thing to do for fun, or as the main focus of the game, they made stunts a way to make your Unicyc..racer go faster.
This makes it so in the later levels you have to be really good at knowing when and how to pull off stunts properly so you are getting enough boosts to keep up with your opponent.

The different cups have a general layout with the first, second, fourth, and fifth courses being races and the third being a stunt based course where you have to rack up a certain amount of points in a variety of stunt based levels. I think they placed this perfectly as the third race right in the middle as it's a nice diversion from all the races. There are 9 cups in total giving the game 45 [!] different races which was a staggering amount that you rarely saw in games for this generation or even the next.

I found the difficulty curve to be very well done in this game. It starts off with a race that is a basic as it can get with being just a flat course [almost like a drag race on Unicycles haha]. This race is a great place to get used to doing rolls as you are racing along as this is a great strategy to gain speed when you are on flat surfaces between jumps.

This game has two great forms of Multiplayer that I played extensively over the years. The first would be the 2 Player mode where you can do all of the races and stunt tracks you have unlocked against a friend rather then the computer. However it also has a League mode where up to 8 people can enter into a tournament playing 2 people at a time. This was something me and my friends really enjoyed playing when we had a big group of us together and later in life was something that proved to be a great game mode while drinking! 🍻

Another great thing about this game is the presentation and music. The whole aesthetic of the game is very late 80's early 90's with vibrant colours and skater/surfer lingo peppered throughout the game. They match up very well with the different groovy and pulsating rock tunes you hear in the races.

With the massive amount of and variety in levels, and really well put together multiplayer mode this game gave a good amount of replay value which was key back in the day when you only got a new game every few months to a year haha. If you are a fan of racing games from the 2-D era or games like Tony Hawk I would recommend giving this one a try!
