Garlic planting timesteemCreated with Sketch.

I'm guessing you all know what time it is when the weather starts getting warm at the end of the winter and your old garlic in the storage begins sprouting little green tips?

That's right it's garlic planting time! Most of our garlic has already been planted in late autumn however we always leave some additional heads of garlic for spring planting. The reason is that we prefer taste of green garlic that was planted in the spring. The stems are easier to chew and the flavour is milder.

We don't plant spring garlic in rows in a bed. Instead we plant single garlic cloves in the beds along the other vegetables we grow. As most of the garden is still in deep winter sleep what we actually do is just stick close of garlic randomly in the beds. In 2 months time when we start seeding and planting the vegetable beds the garlic is already grown enough so we can see where it's located and work around it. Or just pull it up and eat it on the spot!

Oh and by the way the background of that photo is just a small portion of the huge pile of black locust seed pods that we collected during the winter!

I like your integrative garlic planting :) What are you doing with your black locust seed pods!?

Wow! exciting! Will you plant them for coppice or living fences?

Mostly we will try to reforest a piece of land, a small one but still... It was a forest once and then plowed for agriculture and then left fallow but needs a bit of help to turn into a forest as it's right in the middle of a agriculture land and so there's no "help" from nearby forests and animals. Coppice is also in the plans, as we'll plant thickly.

That is a beautiful intention. I wish you all the best in making it happen! Black locust sure is a good choice!

Garlic... I love garlic... I never get around to planting them in the Fall though, perhaps I should try spring!

Interesting garlic post. I was just a trying to find out the best time to plant. I love our black locust trees... What do you use the seed pods for?

Different garlic varieties have different planting times. we have fall garlic that has to be planted in the fall interested in mid summer. There also is a spring variety that is planted in the spring and harvested in early autumn.

About the seed pods, see the other comments with Sage scrub in this post.

oh very interesting post on the black locust seeds... I had no idea the flowers were edible. I've been telling my little one we don't cut those down because they will give us great service when they grow bigger, so we're starting to have more now! Thanks for the lesson on that 😁!
