Carrots In March?! - Growing Zone 7 Orange Gold in Late Winter/Early Spring

in #gardening5 years ago

100% surprised and satisfied with how this went. Planted these carrots last September, let them go over Winter, just sitting in the dirt buried under snow for months.. as they grew during the late Fall months and went into dormancy for the cold months.

They grew well last Season, I could have plucked them then, but I guess since we had already had so many carrots in the fridge, I decided to hold off back then. Well it would appear that it would not be all in vain.

Out of dormancy these carrots are still alive and bare a beautiful orange color. Some were rotten and chewed thru but a whole lot were perfect! And with a good scrubbing wash looked great! Tasted great too!

@kelsnm seems a bit more excited to garden with me this year than last year. Maybe I inspired her a bit with all the success last year. I’m no expert, but I will tell you, “If you plant it, it will grow!” And that’s what I did.. a lot. So we grew a lot. Weather cooperated enough.

We planted a whole row of carrot seeds again after ferilizing the soil, which felt amazing squishing it in my hand. The dirt has seemingly in one season, changed its composition from mostly clay to a nice nice loamy clay. It feels very soft and workable. Much different from last year.

I attribute that to the decaying biomatter wholly incorporated into the dirt medium. From spreading compost, to letting the fallen leaves of the enumerated Kale decay last year to the massive debris fire I had done before digging the actual farm.. something has made the soil very workable compared to the days before I began planting things in the dirt.

Can’t wait to be able to bring my boy out to play in the dirt.

If I went back thru my steem posts id see Iv been having great success growing carrots. Apparently they are pretty easy to grow for anyone out there considering.

I don’t even plant my seeds in the dirt, I broadcast shuffle them like feeding pigeons or something and hope the sheer number of seeds (since they so dang cheap right now) simply take root and begin their growth straight down thru the medium.

And last night after broadcast seeding a long bed, it had rained quite intensely.. with a Strong thunderstorm line forming at a convergence boundary as cold air begins to push back into the locale. So with that the seeds will set into the soil and likely will take hold to begin growing. Exciting.

We saw some amazing updraft columns associated with this storm front..

And some very strange cloud patterns, high altitude, and resembling waves in a lake.

Likely the result of two different layers in the upper atmosphere interacting in a special way, experiencing some sort of friction or shear force.. Creating some sort of wave undulation... or it could be simply resonant waves from the nearby Radio Tower fitted with 5G antennae.

Either way, it has a strange appearance to me.

We also planted green peas. We do expect some cold temperatures to return. I’m always on top of weather information. Here’s a wonderful weather information link for anyone interested in their USA weather.. tropicaltidbits.com.

T-minus 30 hours...

I pray to Heavenly Father.

Sort:

Great to see your carrots wintered okay. You must have mild winters compared to us up north.

Peas are a great early crop and should do well.
