Garden Update: The Starters Are In the Ground!

On Memorial Day, we finally transplanted our starters into the ground

In Colorado, it's hard to know when to pull the trigger and plant your starters. Hail and intense storms have decimated my garden in the past, as I was tricked into planting by early warm weather.

This year, we waited until Memorial Day to give our plants their new home, with plenty more soil space to flourish and (hopefully) nourish us in the future.

This is the first season that we've grown every single plant from seed, with the exception of a single melon plant, though we'll probably pick up some kale starters this weekend since ours didn't do so well. It's incredibly gratifying to grow everything from seed, as you save a ton of money and feel like an actual farmer.

As I've stated in the past, our $30 Amazon greenhouse worked wonders for germinating our starters and was well worth the investment.

Here's our humble plots

Over the past few seasons, we've expanded our garden to include a plot in the front yard as well as a plot along our back fence. This is our front plot, where we have all of our peppers, a few eggplant, a melon plant, and cucumbers that aren't doing too well. Btw, I really need a new camera/phone as this one doesn't take the best pictures, but oh well.

In the plot along our back fence, we have all of our tomato plants. I've switched up where I'm growing them, as it's good to rotate crops as often as possible. We have a ton of Cherokee Purple tomatoes, which is one of my favorite varieties. We also use bamboo trellising to keep them from flopping over, as tomato cages can restrict growth more than what you'd want.

This is our main plot, which has a ton of onions and lettuce, a few eggplants, a strawberry patch, potatoes, beets, radish, and a three sisters planting (barely visible) which consists of squash, corn, and beans interplanted to maximize space and shading. We also have a hops plant on the right that is going crazy and could actually produce a decent amount this year (5th season going).

I'm excited to see how things progress this year and I'm thinking this could actually be the season where we get in the green and produce more veggies than the amount we've spent on the garden. In our dysfunctional world, growing vegetables is one of the most sane activities I can think of engaging in.

congrats! looks like you have LOADS going on here.. not long and it will transform from humble to abundant!

That's what I'm shooting for!

That is good you got them planted. It isn't so easy to grow stuff here in Arizona. We have to fight the land so hard and lately it has been 106 degrees out.

Yeah, I'm sure the soil isn't the best for growing things down there, though you could truck in a ton of compost and make it work with some sun shades to boot...you have to be more than a basic hobbyist for that though.

Thats a great initiative on memorial day.. Happy gardening :)
