Perennial Bed Close Ups

I realized how difficult it was to see any detail in the beds in my last post, so I went in and took some closer shots to show individual plants and some of the landscaping features. I'm so happy with how this all has turned out. With the hardscaping and the planning, plus some hardy volunteer work by the plants themselves, we now have a pleasurable spot to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. And the scent! With the lilies, the Nicotiana, and the Four O'clocks, there is a wafting aroma of perfumes from sunset through the evening. It comes into the kitchen windows, beckoning for you to go outside and take in each flower's offering.

The first photo, above, shows the Ligularia, just coming into full bloom. It has a nice tall, bushy appearance from early in the spring, with a rich color. Mid-summer it throws out these spikes of yellow flowers. This variety is called "Golden Ray." Yeah, the flower could be prettier, but I'd settle for the foliage by itself.

Next to the Ligularia is Rose Balsam, a variety of Impatiens. It grows in bright to dim shade, but will thrive with more light. It can reach two feet in height, and will be filled with blossoms up the entire stalk. Each plant has a different color bloom, making for a vibrant show. When it seeds, the pods will burst apart, throwing the seeds everywhere. It's fun to harvest the seeds with kids, and a challenge to contain. But, those seeds that drop will probably sow themselves next year.

This is purple cone flower, Echinacea.

Canna Lilies, and the steps down to the back.

More of that.

Asiatic Lilies, with the Delphiniums behind. I love those. Such an amazing shade of blue flowers. Iridescent and purply.

And some Coleus.

I hope you enjoyed this closer view of the plants. They bring so much joy, and the wildlife really loves to visit. There's a family of blue jays that has been using this area as a nursery. So fun to watch!

We have so many of the same flowers, but the configuration is so different! That Ligularia has some tough leathery leaves!

I had a LOT of the balsam volunteer in my New Herb garden this year. I was pulling it out of everywhere. But the few I left are nearly 3' tall and blooming profusely!

I love your lilies! I gave up growing them here, they just didn't do well.

Your garden must be so wonderful to wander through, with the flowers and the scents!

Isn't the ligularia great? We have another that I didn't photograph. It's smaller, has green leaves, and the flowers are a bit nicer. We bought that one this spring, and it was already in bloom then. I'm wondering when it will bloom next year considering the other is only blooming now.
We collect the rose balsam seeds, and sprinkle them in empty spots all over the garden. There are so many and they take little effort to start.
These lilies are in the fabric pots so we can move the around. In the past they would get overgrown and wither.
