Weed Weed Management

Weed 2- 3 weeks after planting and second hoe weeding at 4 -6 weeks after planting. Otherwise use chemical herbicides such as:

• Lasso LG - 4 5lits/ha
• Atrazine Liquid - 4 5lits/ha
• Attrazine Powder 1.5-3kg/ha - Primagram - 3lit/ha

Measure 2-2.5 milk tin of Lasso GD into 15lits of clean water in CP 15 sprayer. Spray the herbicide within 1 -2 days after planting maize on moist soil. Avoid spraying on dry soil.

Pests, Diseases and their control

The major Pests of maize are, Striga, stem borer, downy mildew, termites and storage pests.
A single spray with Cypermethrin 10 EC properly timed is adequate to control stem borers while adopting seed treatment helps to control downy mildew. Use resistant varieties in Striga prone areas.

Crop maturity, harvesting and storage

Harvest when the cobs turn brown. Allow harvested maize in the field to dry properly before threshing and bagging. Dry maize grain to a moisture content of about 12% before storage to avoid storage pests. Apply actellic 2% dust for proper protection against insect damage.
