FALL Flower Arranging!! SO EASY!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #gardening5 years ago

So we are officially into Fall even tho, krikey!, it's like 80 degrees out today here in NJ! Regardless, the fall garden is starting to look a bit ratty-tatty, but there are some real gems awaiting notice. Blooming flowers, of course, but don't overlook the remaining seedpods and branches and leaves that can be just as interesting.

And on colder days (yes, they will come soon!) it's really nice to bring some of those beauties inside to admire and frankly, make us feel good.

So here's a handful of flowers I cut and brought in last week...

that's sedum 'autumn joy' on lower left,
leaves of cotinus (aka smokebush) on lower right,
upper left are seed pods left from some anemone,
and then center are some arborescens stalks from Heuchera 'Autumn Bride',
and finally the purple is Caryopteris 'Longwood Blue' - my favorite- the blue is outstanding.

the question becomes, How do I make them look nice for displaying indoors?

You don't have to be an expert flower arranger, but having some handy vases/containers can make it easier.

FIRST ARRANGEMENT
I really really love these 3 very small clear glass vases. They are only 2 and 1/2 inches tall(my sunglasses for scale!).

I group them together and leave them out on a table. You don't need a lot of plant material to make something fun and pretty:

IMG_0111.jpg I love that there is one leaf that is already turned red.

SECOND ARRANGEMENT
For the next arrangement I made with that bunch, I used my absolute favorite container.

THis is a piece of granite rock with a hole drilled out for the pronged holder called a "frog" and there is room for water . You can stick any flowers or branches in that thing and you will look like an expert flower arranger!

Not sure the next arrangement looks like an expert did it, but I think it's fine for the plant material that I picked...

THIRD ARRANGEMENT
Okay, new flowers...Here are the zinnias I planted in some raised beds last May. They were certainly prolific and got really tall - they sure do love full sun :-)

Zinnias are great in that you can really just put them in any vase and they will bring their cheeriness right into your home. I happen to have a fabulous container - well it's really 6 small containers - that really was great for the zinnias...

So there you have it...flowers may not be edible, but they sure do provide some natural eye-candy!

Happy Gardening everyone!
