Foolish Looking Wrapped Figs

Fresh figs are wonderful and easy to grow of you live in the South, but we have not harvested many in the past few years.

The problem is that they just freeze and die back to the ground each winter and it is the older wood that produces a reliable fig crop.

An acquaintance once told me that the old Italian guys in her New York neighborhood kept their fig trees alive through the winter by wrapping them with tar paper.

The wood is remarkably flexible, so you can bend a whole plant into a very small bunch.

I used a few ratchet straps to bring everything together, then tied it in place with twine.

Then I wrapped it with an old bed sheet and piled leaves around the base. When the weather warms up in the Spring I will release the bundle and see if any of the branches survived.

In a good year, this plant has produced 10 pounds of figs or more. We will have to wait until April to find out if the experiment worked.
