Vegetable Gardening | There's Weeds and There's Bamboo
My vegetable garden is coming along nicely. It was time to tackle the bamboo from next door.
This was a vigorous variety, throwing up thick, ten feet high canes in a matter of days and taking over the garden three feet at a time. We chopped down as much as we could, stripping the canes of foliage and setting them to dry. We have enough for some stakes and trellis and other garden screening.
Today we started hacking out the roots and suckers. A big job and not easy in the mix of clay soil and rubble that characterises the top terrace of the vegetable bed. It might take a while.
Five foot high pots of bamboo sell for £90 in a local garden centre. Bamboo is great if you keep it in the pot. It makes lovely screening and the rustling of the foliage is soothing. We've kept a couple of suckers to experiment with - a few extra £90 would be a nice bonus.
I like the bamboo screen but as you know it is invasive and my neighbor just planted some near my yard....so I will have to make sure it doesn't grow out of control into my yard.🙄
That's right. The gardener was saying about getting some metal sheets on the boundary of the property. It grows really thick and knotted, we went to buy an axe yesterday to get through it.
We've talked about getting some bamboo as screens too @shanibeer... very hard to work in the heat though.
It looks nice, but is very invasive (and very expensive)!
We worked in the shade in the morning. Tomorrow I think we will do some planting when it gets very hot.
