Easier way to plant carrots - Mittleider garden method

A couple years ago I learned about this easier way to plant carrot seeds in your garden. Simply mix one part seeds into 100 parts dry sand and then pour the seeds into the row where you want your carrots. 1/2 teaspoon of seeds and 1 cup of sand fit into a pint sized jar and will cover two 10 foot long rows of carrots.

Add the carrot seed and sand to a container, such as a mason jar, and mix the seeds and sand thoroughly. Make a slightly indented row with a tool such as a hoe handle and shake a slight amount of the sand into those rows. The seeds will be dispersed in the sand. When they sprout they should require minimal thinning.

The sand should be a clean concrete sand, but play sand would do. It being cleaned is important to insure you’re not adding weed seeds to your garden that will end up competing with your carrots. The sand should also be dry to make mixing in the seeds and shaking it out much easier. If your sand is damp you can easily dry it on a cookie sheet laid in the sun, or even in your oven.

What a wonderful idea!!! I've always hated the idea of wasting seed - this is the way to avoid that!

Back in the day I always tried to separate off and space the seeds individually so I did not need to thin them out later. This makes that process so much easier.
