The ancient Greeks cultivated roses extensively for the beauty of the flowers, for medicinal purposes, and for perfume. They dedicated the roses to two deities. Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, and Dionysus, the god of revelry.

In the genus Rosa there are over one hundred and fifty species (types) of roses that have specific characteristics. These "species roses" are plants that grow in the wild and from which all other roses are descended.

Some species of roses bloom only once, during the spring or summer, but many have a second, lesser bloom in the fall.

With so many roses to choose from, gardeners need some sort of classification system. Roses are divided into three broad types: species roses, old garden roses, and modern roses.

It was during the height of the Roman Empire that rose cultivation reached its peak in the ancient world.

The Romans imported roses from Egypt and established a thriving rose growing industry at Paestum south of Rome.
