Sustainable Feast in The Garden of Eden
It is a fantastic day in the Garden of Eden, and we are giving thanks for more than enough of everything in this abundant life of freedom!
We made a delicious feast for our volunteers today, cooking over fire using our handmade earthen rocket stoves in our sustainable outdoor kitchen! As usual, there was more than enough food for everyone, and we are happy to share our abundance with you.
We prepared a turkey burger feast with yummy fixins, a big garden salad, steamed sweet potatoes and acorn squash, sautéed brussels sprouts, and even dessert!
It was a great feast, with lots of hearty, nutritious dishes.
We started with a bright, raw garden salad! We laid a bed of mixed greens we picked right out of the yard and topped them with red and yellow cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, cucumber, onion, grated carrots, and crunchy pumpkin seeds, which are not only delicious but have important anti-parasitic properties!
For our meat eaters, we made a main dish of turkey burgers! These are made with ground turkey, onion, garlic, salt, spices, and an egg and a sprinkle of bread crumbs for binder. We pan-seared these burgers today because we had the skillet hot on the rocket stove and didn't want to light another fire for the grill.
We served a variety of condiments for burger toppings: spicy salsa, crispy bacon strips, and white cheddar cheese.
We also had a delicious southwestern guacamole on the side! This has the traditional avocado, garlic, lime juice, salt, onion, and tomato, and we threw in some cumin, corn, and black beans for extra flavor - olé!
For a side dish, we made a sautéed pan of brussels sprouts with onions, mushrooms, and red bell peppers. They were super flavorful and super nutritious!
We made steamed sweet potatoes, which is one of our favorite side dishes and so very easy to make! We scrubbed the skin of the potatoes and pierced them with a fork, then steamed them until tender. We halved an acorn squash and scooped out the seeds, then steamed it alongside the sweet potatoes as well. Both of these sweet veggies are high in beta carotene!
We even made a cute little dessert - teeny tiny pumpkin pies with sweet whipped cream! What an epic spread!
Food is important, and we hope to inspire people to really take time to eat, enjoy it, and share it with someone you love. We also hope to inspire more and more sustainable practices in regards to food!
We do all of our cooking over fire, using wood that was otherwise destined to end up in a landfill! This is one of our rocket stoves in action - we built it by hand out of dirt.
