Good Eye 好眼睛

“Good Eye”, literally means an eye is functioning well. However, it is an idiom of the Jews, meaning, generous. Therefore, if you are being referred to as having a “good eye”, it signifies that you are a generous person.

Why did the Jews use the idiom “good eye”, rather than an adjective, “generous”?

In fact, the Jews are the oriental people, they are culturally similar to the Chinese in a number of area. Take an example, the Chinese tend to refer to a snobbish person as “looking down at others with a dog eye” (狗眼看人低).

The other reason for referring a generous person as having a good eye is based on concrete behaviour. For example, if we look at people living in severe poverty, and we are moved and want to help them. As we are moved by the situation because of what we see, then we can be described as having a “good eye”. Comparatively, we look down on others, then it is having “dog eye”. Indeed, the Jews refer stingy people as having “evil eye”.

“好眼睛”按照字面意思即是指运作良好的眼睛。其实这是犹太人的成语，意思是慷慨。如果你被称为拥有“好眼睛”，那表示你是一个慷慨的人。

为什么犹太人使用“好眼睛”，而不是形容词“慷慨”呢？

事实上，犹太人是东方人，在多方面，犹太人和中国人在文化上有很多相似之处。举个例子，中国人会把以势利待人的态度称之为“狗眼看人低”。

另一方面，把慷慨的人称为拥有好眼睛是対具体行为的一个解释。例如，如果我们看到生活在極窮困中的人，被触动情懷而要帮助他们，因为看到了而有一个慷慨行动，那么我们便可以被描述为有”好眼睛”的人。相比之下，假如我们瞧不起别人，便是所谓带着”狗眼”。事实上犹太人使用”惡眼人”来形成吝啬的人。
