Starsky and Hutch: It's silly but one of my favorite Stiller comedies

in #getyerlearnon6 years ago

Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller haven't acted together in a while, but there was a time that they were seemingly just working together on comedies beause well, i would imagine it made a bunch of money (this one made $170 million.) Zoolander was actually the first time I saw these two work together and much like Zoolander, their performances in Starsky and Hutch worked very well because they have great chemistry on screen.

If you are unfamiliar with the movie it is based on a long-running television program from the 70's. I was too young to have ever watched it but it goes like this: David Starsky (Ben Stiller) is a "strictly by the book" cop who exercises and is constantly training to be the best cop he can be

and Ken Hutchinson (Owen Wilson) is more of a renegade in the law-enforcement system. The opening sequence sees his operation that he has been skimming money from get busted by other cops and he reluctantly shows his badge to the gangsters that he has been helping to succeed in breaking the law for a while.

They end up becoming partners and things don't work out so great at first because they are constantly butting heads on how to handle a case. This begins with them discovering a "floater" (dead body in the water) and Hutch suggests that "these never get solved and there is a lot of paperwork, let's just push it out to sea and let the next precinct handle it."

Through a series of events they end up uncovering a plan on the part of Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn), a well-known gangster who has discovered a method of smuggling cocaine into the USA. Since both Starsky and Hutch are deep uncercover, they come up with a series of absurd disguises to infiltrate Feldmens' events. Including playing talent-less mimes at his daughter's birthday party

then grizzled bikers infiltrating a biker hangout where the are almost immediately "made" for having fake mustaches

Then finally as business moguls (and this one was my favorite) where Stiller has a great backtory of his character "Maury Finkle, founder of Finkle Fixtures, Biggest Lighting Fixture Chain in the Southland."

While this movie isn't exactly groundbreaking and is just another remake of sorts, it was incredibly entertaining and funny. If you haven't seen it, I belive this is probably in my top 20 or maybe even top 10 silly comedies of all time.

Thanks for the great posts.

The tale of two oddball police detectives who have a habit of getting stuck in awkward situations even with the best of intentions. Starsky (Ben Stiller) is very much by-the-book – embarrassingly so – whereas Hutch has a laid back rather ‘hippy' approach to the rules. One of the films great strengths is that it plays on satire and keeps the action secondary. The two main characters are ably aided and abetted by Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg) and, although there is a big-drugs-bust plotline, the movie's main intention seems to be to make a homage to the style and clichés of certain 70s filmmaking (and the original TV show); car chases, for instance, focus on tongue-in-cheek action rather than adrenalin, and the cops' love of empty-headed curvaceous women combined with a homophobia towards each other and gay men is portrayed laughingly as an echo of the attitudes of the times rather than appealing to those sentiments. Not the sort of comedy I expected to enjoy so much personally, but I quickly warmed to this movie and found the feelgood factor continued unabated till the end.

Stiller and Wilson together is alway an epic thing to happen, althought it hasnt been happening much whenever it does you can surely prepare yourself for a good laughter and fun relaxing entertainment

Maybe i would watch it on TV, I don't like stiller/wilson that much. The original show is pretty dated...

I have watched this comedy film.Seems a really grrat comedy film with ben to be best cop.

gooddream, Its a drama or film?

very funny and interesting movie.

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

If you haven't seen it, I belive this is probably in my top 20 or maybe even top 10 silly comedies of all time.
It should be believe instead of belive.

Oh man, I loved that movie. It's the sort of movie they don't make much any more because it's not a CGI film and it won't win any Oscars.

As it happens, I saw the original show in reruns, and it's all seventies action set-pieces, nowhere near as funny.

The two leads have great onscreen chemistry, but from what I remember, most of the laughs come courtesy of Ben Stiller. In reverse order, my favorite laughs were:-

(5) Ben Stiller shoots a lizard's tail off
(4) Ben Stiller questions a naked woman
(3) Ben Stiller shoots a pony at a party
(2) Ben Stiller dance competition, on coke
(1) A little kid throws knives at Ben Stiller

It was the last one that cracked me up the most. I decided if I ever make a movie, there absolutely must be a knife-throwing kid in in it! :)
