Thai football coach trapped in cave unlikely to face charges

in #getyerlearnon6 years ago (edited)

There was some international chatter about the coach, who lead his football (soccer) team into the cave in Chaing Rai would be facing charges of negligence or criminal endangerment of minors for his role in leading the young football players into the cave that flooded in the north of Thailand and thus resulted in the entire group being trapped for 2 weeks.

Ekkapol Ake Chantawong is the name of the coach and as it turns out he is actually a very respected member of the community he is a part of. Orphaned as a child due to the death of both his parents, he is a former monk and frequently donates his time to community service. This hardly fits the profile of a person who enjoys putting young kids at risk of harm.

He only receives a small stipend to coach the Wild Boars youth football team and always drives all the kids home after each practice and game, to ensure that they return home safely. He frequently takes his personal time (unpaid) to organize activities for the kids on the team, this cave trip (although it had a very unfortunate outcome) was one of those trips.

The local community where his is from have publicly rallied around him, demanding that no charges be filed against him. This support includes the family members of the children that he was tasked with looking after that were trapped in the cave with him. It has been said by the children who were trapped with him, that he didn't eat at all the first 2 days they were trapped but instead gave all his food to the players on the team.

Ake, as he is known (it is common in Thailand for everyone to use a shorter "nickname") insisted that he be the last one out of the cave to ensure the children's safety despite the fact that at this point there were hundreds of rescue personnel involved in the rescue.

I live in Thailand, this is the talk of the country right now and I am yet to meet a single Thai person who believes that Ake should face charges of any sort.

When a reporter asked a senior police official about whether or not Ake will face charges the officer responded: "In Thailand, we also look at whether or not the person in question had intent to cause harm, rather than just the harm done." While I generally disagree with a great deal of the "justice" that takes place in this country, I agree with this statement entirely.

What do you think? Do you think Ake should be reprimanded for endangering the kids? Or should we just chalk this one up to bad luck and be thankful that everything turned out alright in the end?

Great Post

Why do bad things happen to good people?

With the story associated with the incident, I think he should not be charged at all, what other testimony do we need to be sure that the man conscience is clean?

Request

Can I make use of the picture in your post?

best of luck the little football team of the Thailand.

This story proves Ake is a great and kind hearterd man and that the children, their parents as well as the community knew the kind of person he his proves he doesn't deserve to be reprimanded. They all were just a victim of an unfortunate event.

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

He only recieves a small stipend to coach the Wild Boars youth football team and always drives all the kids home after each practice and game, to ensure that they return home safely.
It should be receives instead of recieves.

Don't See Mistakes of their post, but see what amazing post he writes daily.

See good things instead of little mistakes...

Ohhh okkk...
Thanks to both for the sharing this news

no need to get angry at it :) , it's just a bot :) Sometimes I throw mistakes in there intentionally to see how much it can actually detect.

Trust you, I was once the bot detecting those errors with my eagle eyes, but I've turned man now, living other bots with the work.. Smile

bad news for their coach

Will become a very big football team
For he takes the love
They do the impossible
I expect him to have a wonderful success

Everyone makes mistakes, i am just glad they all made it out alive
