Homegrown Mushrooms update

Well I’ve had a few months up and have plenty to share with you all, one of the more exciting ones (in my eyes) if how my mushroom growing experiment is getting on. It’s not been without issues but that’s part of the fun of learning and each time i overcome a hurdle it brings me joy.

If you hadn't seen or cant remember i put a post up nearly 3 months ago when i embarked on this adventure see the link if havent
homegrown-mushroom-update-1-week-in

This didn’t go as planned unfortunatly and resulted in a horrible mess that smelt worse than death!!! But i learned a few things in the process

Moisture is critical
To little and you wont get any growth, to much and it will result in the most foul smelling gloop not what you want when your trying to grow them in the kitchen

The growing medium is important
Certain Mushrooms will only grow in certain growing mediums, some are better than others and some will give results that you don't want…

In my case i had an issue with the growing medium, I’d read online that you could use brown rice flour mixed with perlite to create a suitable high performance growing medium. I didn't have the funds to use this and though brown rice would be suitable. It is most definitely NOT, this stuff didn't absorb the water the way I’d hoped for and left a lot of space between the medium that resulted in pooling water leading to that dreadful smell of death…

Sometimes you have pull it back from the brink
Of my six jars i managed to save a few, draining off the water and packing the remaining space in the jar with dry newspaper. This must of worked wonders as id forgotten about it for a month and came back to this...

My Mycelium had exploded and made a break for freedom

With this in mind i did a bit more reading and found a lot of people were having success with using cardboard as a medium so i set to work to save the others, and with the ones that were doing well moving them to a DIY fruiting chamber

Carboard ready to be loaded up and mushroom spawn from the good jars added to seed

a spare glass aquarium put to use to house the mushroom spawn

This was filled with a thin layer of perlite and the jars emptied into it to get ready for the next phase.

Pinning
This is where all the little fruits of the mycelium start to poke out in simple terms, and requires warmth and moisture. It was really great to see this happen within 48 hours of putting them in the tank.

look at those pretty little pins

Fruiting
Within a few more days we had Mushrooms 😬 but this is where i encountered another problem… a few and small mushrooms, not what i want as im looking to stop buying them from the shop is this was to go to plan…

I can only conclude that the volume of mycelium is to small to put out a large and vast amount of mushrooms.

Tiny little mushrooms 😀

This is something that im working on currently scaling up the operation and learning from the troubles i’ve encountered so far.

So next time i talk mycelium with you it will be running though how i am taking this to the next level

Oh so cool! I’ve wanted to try my hand at growing my own mushrooms for awhile - I always walk by the kits at the farmers market and think about getting one. This is inspiring me - awesome project. :)

I was the same, just im compelled to try and do everything my self, leant the hard way a few times because of it. Glad you liked it 🙂

I hope that you will master this skill and share with us the tips and tricks to grow BIG mushrooms so that we can stop purchasing them from the shop. They are so expensive. I love them but they really are overpriced. I would love to be able to grow my own. Good luck!

Thanks thats was my plan to stop buying them from the shops, and learn along the way. Thanks for stopping by
