Another Calf Born On The Homestead

in #ghsc5 years ago (edited)

Hey everyone! It is another great week here on the homestead. For today’s post, I wanted to show you all another calf that was born on our homestead about a week and a half ago.

With all our calves, we have a special area of the barn sanctioned off as maternity ward. So when we cows getting close or showing signs of labor, we put them in this designated area. Since it has been around 30-35 with wind chills that create a cold chill in the air, we feel that watching for these signs and getting them separated off is very important to ensure these calves stay warm.

So about 2 weeks ago, we noticed one of our heifers was showing signs of labor and we put her in a stall thinking that it would be several hours. She was put in about 5 p.m. and we left her alone to get a few things in done. Well we went back out to check on her around 7 p.m., and the calf was already on her feet and nursing. I could not believe how quick it all went down and was probably one of the quickest births that we have had on the homestead.

Now that it is a week and a half later, the calf is doing very, very well. She is hoping around and playing with her little sister who is about 2 weeks older. With 3 more cows to give birth, I am hoping that it starts to warm up soon.

Thanks for reading and stopping by!
