A beautiful and edible Hibiscus flower

Not only are Hibiscus beautiful and hardy plants but being in the Mallow family, Malvaceae, they are quite edible.

You can eat them raw, straight from the plant where they are kind of bland and, if you keep them in your mouth for a while, they turn kind of slimy from the mucilage that Mallows are famous for.

I like to pinch out the stamen and snack on that. It's crispy and often has a surprisingly sharp taste.

Fresh, they make a nice, cooling, soothing addition to salads.

Some folks batter them and fry the result, making for an interesting texture. Me, though, I've not mastered that yet and my efforts taste of... well... batter.

Maybe you'll have better luck.

There are so many around where I grew up and had no idea you could eat them 😆 not sure why that didn’t occur to me as my godfather did show me how to eat roses and rose hips 🙃

That's so often the way... We are surrounded by something so it escapes our attention. My thinking is that we are all presented with what we need for our healing, we just forget to look

Beautiful photos @ligayagardener, this is such a gorgeous flower! I love the flavor of hibiscus. I've got a large jar of dried flowers that I use to make a comforting tea in the winter. I even dyed some string with the juice and got a lovely color from it.

We are also running our fortnightly competition for steem rewards, where you can explore a plant medicine! Check it out here - this fortnight's plants are valerian, salvia divinorum and thyme!
