Clean Up From Tropical Storm Michael

I took the day off from work to clear the tree out of the driveway and keep the generator going so that my wife can work on her editing job. This tree always looked like it was not going to last too long because it had two equal trunks that started from the same stump. That is what happens when you clear cut some land and let the new trees sprout up from the stumps. It is a good way to grow firewood, but you can't really expect the trees to live long enough to make good saw logs. They tend to rot and become hollow as the old stump decomposes within the new trees. That is exactly what happened to this tree.

I'm really happy with this second hand chainsaw that I bought on Ebay. My other saw is an old Stihl 021 with a 16" blade. It is nice and light, but it is very wimpy; it might be better off with a 12" blade. This one is a Stihl 391 with a 24" blade. It is a real firewood cutting machine.

It is a lot heavier than my little saw, but it is actually less fatiguing to use. The little saw will bog down if you let the full weight of saw push down on the blade, so you have to keep lifting up the whole time you are cutting. It also cuts fairly slowly, even with a razor sharp chain.

This big saw has enough power to pull a 3/8" chain right through oak even with the full weight of the saw pushing down on the blade. It also cuts super fast, so you end up doing a lot more cutting in the same amount of time. It is always nice to have the right tool for the job.

The wet weather has some benefits. These beautiful mushrooms popped up over night. Compared to the rotten weather yesterday, this has been a nice day. The air is dry and cool, just like the early Fall should be.

Done in no time. Of course, it helped that my neighbor showed up and did half the work before I even finished my coffee.

Cheers, Professor Bromide

That's a lot of firewood you have.

Yes it is, and my wood shed is already full.

As per the previous comment you'll be OK for firewood for a long while! It's unseasonably warm with temperatures around 10C higher than they would normally be. It's been blustery here in the UK and we're all moaning about it - we could never deal with the storms you get over there.

We are still without power. It might be Monday before they get it back on. At least the weather is clear and cool now. We only really need power to keep the deep freeze cold.
