Automatic thoughts and anxiety

in #godflesh6 years ago (edited)

People suffer either because they have behavioral patterns deficits or do not have enough of them. In both cases, these models are not working, adaptive, and lead the person to failures, sufferings and pain. Behavioral model has its rational structure - these are beliefs, beliefs, assumptions, thoughts, schemes, assessments, principles, worldview, attitudes, attitudes, etc. They govern the behavior of personality as one acts as dictated by these rational constructs. When it fits in and fits into them, within its limits, one considers himself to be successful. The point is that not always accepted cognitive schemes are adequate to reality. They do not always provide for the adaptation of the individual in life (in the community), and then the problems arise.

Anxiety arises spontaneously when focusing on thoughts that begin with the words "What if". People learn to think in a certain way as a result of their life experience. In this case, through emotions, one evaluates and regulates his behavior. The relationship between thoughts and emotions is two-sided - they influence each other. Emotions, however, are more primitive, more difficult to control, much more closely related to the genetic and hereditary predestination of the individual (with personality traits)
Here are some peculiarities of automatic thoughts:

  • Automatic and elusive - affect the feelings of man. He never thinks about them, but focuses on his experiences.
  • Telegraph style - may contain a short word or image that unlocks a whole series of thoughts, memories, or associations.
  • Irrational, but sounding real - "What if" is waiting for the worst possible outcome of a situation, even if it is totally unbelievable, but since the association is done so quickly, it remains unchecked and accepted as undeniable. the credibility of a belief, for which a person barely realizes - is simply appreciated.
  • Reinforcing avoidance - Automatic thoughts lead to avoidance, avoidance also raises an anxious internal monologue and the cycle continues and continues.
  • It causes or aggravates anxiety ("panic") - "Oh no, it happens again", "What if I lose control?", "I have to get out of here" or "I will fight it and make it disappear" .
  • Automatic thoughts are a series of bad habits. People learn to think stereotypically.
    Typology of automatic thoughts

Typology of the individual depending on their leading automated thoughts:
a) First category - Leading to them is a hysterical attitude. They are restless, petty, emotionally labile, impulsive, highly reactive and reflexive, low threshold of frustration, sensitive, insensitive, inadequately low self-esteem, pessimistic attitudes, outward locus, tend to underestimate and at the same time hyperbolize the outside world, developed fantasy thinking in the direction catastrophic predictions. Top Trends: Expecting the Worst; overestimates the likelihood of something bad or disturbing; creates grandiose pictures of potential failure or disaster.Favorite expression: "What if ..."
Typical automatic thoughts: "What if I suppose I did not tell the truth?", "What if my car breaks down during my trip?", "What if I ask questions during the presentation?", "Well if he started to petition in the middle of his speech? "," What if they see me trembling? "

b) Second category - Leading to them is inadequately low self-esteem. They are highly self-critical, underestimate or ignore their positive qualities, inclined to escape, denial, reconciliation, conformism, strong guilt, introspective, communication problems, social relationships, have always unsatisfied need for friends, unsustainable and inconsistent - they can always give up, unsure, dependent people, constantly compare themselves to others by making negative conclusions about themselves, with a fixed focus on their imperfections and shortcomings. The behavioral model of such a category of people is usually a product of power, controlling, despotic parents, a strong and suppressing supernatural. In their childhood they have been subject to continuous control and sanctioning effects. In their school years, they were oriented to escape from failures. They have not received enough care, security, warmth and positive stimulation.
