Life and creativity of Alexander Dumas /part 2/

in #godflesh6 years ago (edited)

In the second half of the 1920s, Dumas understands that the shortest route to glory is the dedication of the theater, where the historical dramas push the old-fashioned classical tragedies of antique mythology and story stories. He wrote the drama "Henri III and his court", which is played for the first time in the Parisian Theater of French Actors on February 10, 1829. Shortly afterwards, the critically acclaimed drama of Hugo "Hernani", the premiere theater historians in France, was mentioned in the same prestigious theater of the capital as "the first triumph of the romantic drama" in Paris.

Then the French press reacted sharply against daring innovative experimentation in the theater and unprejudicedly proclaimed the initiators of the romantic drama of "modern barbarians." One of the objective theatrical critics, however, found that "Dumas face radiates the boldness of the romantics." In spite of the wicked attacks, the young Parisian intellectuals accept the play of the black slaves' grandson's play, which is particularly well received with the poetic provocations. The famous French painter, Ashley Deverey, portrays the first portrait of the young writer Dumas, who has gained scandalous acclaim. In 1830, the Duke of Orleans invites the famous young author as his librarian. This new position allows Dumas to visit the Romantic Circle of the Romantique, formed in 1827 around Victor Hugo, and to participate in the Battle of Hernani, In July 1830, the Revolution conquered Parisian streets and squares, the son of the late General Dumas, the only one of the then literary writers, abandoned the writing to share the enthusiasm of those who erected on the barricades and with arms in hand, defend their Republican beliefs. The dedicated warrior of the Republic, Alexander Dumas, is engaged in an important mission in the city of Saison, where he heads the capture of a large gun factory. Later, he and his political followers were amazed when their former leader and patron Louis-Philippe declared himself the "King of France." A deeply disappointed Dumas sent him a categorical request to leave the post of "courtier librarian": "In my opinion, the literary is just a pre-announced policy."

Only the proclaimed French King Louis of Philip does not forgive the proud Republican writer. Deprived of money, Dumas finds himself compelled to support only the fees he pays for his literary creations. He re-enters the race to take on the Paris theater scene. In 1831, Dumas wrote a poem tragedy, an impressive historical melodrama, and the drama "Antoni," which in May 1831 became a second stage triumph in the biography of the young dramographer. He established himself as a talented man, mastering the poetics of the romantic dramatic artist. The melodramas he has produced are indisputable successes among the audiences of those who are passionate about the passion. Among his melodramas, his most successful creations should be noted: "The Tower of Nelson", "Keane" (1836), "The Lady of Bell-Il" (1839). But later, in 1836, Alexander Dumas was experiencing his first failure as a playwright - presenting a scene of his tragedy in five Caligula acts in Comedy Franzise / no success. After realizing that the "tragedy" genre is difficult, Dumas makes a decisive choice that predetermines the direction of his life: he devotes himself totally to the development of the genre "novel", especially his fashion subtype in the era of Romanticism - the "historical novel".

Sort:

I always imagine Dumas as one of the three Musketeers, an action-packed adventurer on the go. Instead, he seems to be an adventurer of the letters. Theatre, novels, a genre revolutionary. Very unlike his characters and very similar to them in unexpected ways.

Interesting piece of history. Thankyou
