Some thoughts about the ethical issues of violence and cruelty

Violence and nonviolence. Ethics of Non-Violence. What place does the problem of morality violence pose? If it is possible to express the essence of morality in one word, then it is the word violence. The attitude towards violence is the critical point at which we can experience morality. Through the attitude towards violence, the morality is checked. It is no accident that the oldest ban that marks the emergence of morality is the prohibition of murder as the ultimate form of violence.

Why do moral requirements take the form of prohibitions? As has been said, morality implies an individual freedom of choice in a particular situation. There are many sciences that give positive advice and contain positive action programs. For example, diets prescribe a strict diet for a particular disability or a serious health problem. Medicine prescribes a particular way of life to treat illnesses. The economy gives us advice on how to become rich. Ethics does not give advice because its purpose is to form the ability to be free. Morality, as a special sphere of human existence, fixes "the thin border defining the space of reasonable human activity by the kingdom of the blind need. As ethics deals with autonomous subjects, its norms have the appearance of prohibitions, leaving room for individual freedom of choice in every particular situation. Ethics does not prescribe anything to man, all the most important decisions he has to take on his own, but he tells him what he should not do. Its requirements are necessary but not sufficient.

What is this violence?

In the narrow sense of the word, violence is the use of brute force and, above all, physical for the purpose of bodily harm, robbery, rape, murder. In the broad sense of the word, violence is any suppression of man (not only physical, but also psychological, moral, economic, ideological, etc.). The forms and methods of violence have been improved along with the development of society. Disciplinary space and time, manipulation of public opinion using shock therapy, brainwashing, behavioral modification are examples of the latest technologies of virtual violence. What is violence?

Violence is a term formed by analogy with the ancient Hindu understanding of tolerance, enshrined in the philosophy of Hinduism and Buddhism. Martin L. King said in one of his speeches: "Non-violence is a powerful and just weapon. It is indeed a kind of weapon in history; it strikes without causing wounds, and it spares, those who possess it. " Thanks to this concept, Indian civilization survives in antiquity, unlike many others who die because of their aggressiveness. I mean Babylon, Egypt, the Mayan civilization and others. The principle of "non-violence" is sufficient to determine the essence of morality.
