Are Kings Careless? - The prodigal Son

Why do kings find it easy to promise to give up to half of their kingdom? To me this is a reckless promise or behaviour for any king to issue. What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom (Esther 5:3).

What was the king thinking?

And he promised this same tremendous offer again in Esther 7:2. Herod Antipas in this line made a thoughtless promise to the daughter of Herodias (Mark 6:23). This is very irresponsible for a king, don’t you think? Esther’s life was on the line when she walked into the den of a proud, domineering and self-important king. She was not called; it was not her duty time, but she knew the voice of grace that was speaking. She had a law against her being in the king’s presence uninvited; yet she went in. She had no friend to go with her or plead her cause; yet she went in. It was her enemy that was the king’s best friend; yet she took a stand.

Everything could have worked against her, but surprisingly, instead of the king to take Esther as an offender, he was instead glad to see her, and eager to oblige her even to half of his kingdom.

Wow.

When you delight a king, there is absolutely nothing that can be denied you. If you can imagine it, the king will do it if you will just ask for it.

The prodigal son went to his father and said ‘Father, give me the portion of good that falls to me’. As if his father was eager to oblige him, he did not argue with him, instead he divided unto them his living (Luke 15:12); that is into two because he had two sons. Many people understand the story of the prodigal son as a very simply story. Something like a story teller summarizing a story book for a child who has less than ten minutes to fall asleep. The story will look like:-
"Story, story, (story). Once upon a time (Time, time)! There was a man who had two sons and the younger one came to meet his father and asked for his portion of the father’s inheritance. The father gave him and he went to a far country and wasted the money. In the far country, there was a severe famine that started after he finished all his money. He now went to get a job feeding pigs and eating their food. After a while, he now realized that his father’s servants were eating good food and he decided to go to his father so that he will have food to eat. The father was waiting for him, so when he saw him, he ran to meet him and they killed a fat calf and he hosted a big party for him. His brother came back and was angry. He did not want to enter because he felt that his father was doing what is wrong. When the father met him, he persuades the older son and he did not get angry again, and"... At this time, the baby will be fast asleep, probably dreaming of a birthday party.

If this is how you have understood this encounter, you have been so cheated. You own it to yourself to have a better understanding especially in line with understanding grace. The parable will share more light and then you will see more than the surface holds.
