The Importance of Gratitude, and Not Taking Things for Granted

Sometimes it's difficult to find anything to be grateful for.

We may find ourselves in situations of protracted hardship where it feels like no matter how hard we try, it just feels like we're sliding backwards into a bottomless abyss.

Wherever we look, there are difficulties, and perhaps those around us are suffering, as well. It's easy for our sense of despair to color every experience we encounter.

The path we walk is often filled with challenges!

At such times gratitude may only come from stopping and appreciating the small things around us. It could be something as simple as our dog wagging his tail, or our cat purring as she sleeps in our lap, or the particularly vibrant color of a tree with autumn foliage.

But if we take the time, in such moments we discover that there are lots of little things to be grateful for.

I often tell people that gratitude is a practice because when things are difficult, you do have to actively observe your surroundings to find your points of gratitude.

Along with this ongoing practice, we also learn to not take these little things for granted, because they can actually make all the difference in our mood.

So consider this:

Do you express gratitude to your partner/spouse who brings a hot cup of coffee to you, every morning? Or has it just become "habit?" Do you express gratitude to your mail carrier, who takes the time to put your mail in a plastic bag, every time it's a rainy day?

Do you notice all the people who contribute a little bit extra to your daily life, over and above the basic requirements? Because they are everywhere... if we just take the time. And do you thank them, to let them know that you did notice and that their acts matter?

Making the world a better place for all of us often starts with a simple gratitude practice!

What are you grateful for, today?

Bright Blessings to all!
