People would say that the best education is one that pays greatest attention to what students really want. In some sense, it is true that in scheduling courses one of the most important considerations should be students’ own demands. However, the responsibility of educators to provide students with the opportunity to become more balanced and well-rounded future citizens precludes the wisdom to follow only students’ capricious demands.
Of course, it is undeniable that teachers should respect students’ actual needs and unique interests. Especially during the time of low level of confidence and motivation among students, any wise teacher would look for certain starting points for students’ recovery of pride and confidence from their excellences. During slumps, necessity to study subjects that have usually alienated a certain student may aggravate his pain and depression.
The importance of students’ own interests seems clear when it comes to development of students’ sense of responsibility. Instead of being controlled by a variety of mandatory courses which, at best, incur students’ passivity in learning, those who are given a chance to study what they are committed to will learn actively with greater enthusiasm and sense of duty.
However, the effectiveness of respect for students’ personality and autonomous interests does not necessarily exclude the importance of an academic curriculum which incorporates both what students usually favor and what they usually dislike. With regard to more balanced development of a child, education needs to serve its original and traditional mission: disciplining rather than pampering, guidance than following the instinctive desires. For future artists who are more competent than who they intrinsically are, schools should provide students with ample knowledge in science and mathematics whether the prospective art students like them or not. For future scientists who have a balanced sensibility in social value and general ethics, thoughtful educators should provide them with a number of courses in arts, literature, and ethics whether they want to know those subjects or not.
